Buying cars as investments ? Don't we all wish. If you study that a smidge you will quickly determine that the only cars that works for are the extremely limited production items which for the most part are are so astronomically expensive that they are out of the reach of all but the rich and famous. And only some of them. As stated in previous posts I love the Healey 3000 and just recently was able to visit a restoration shop. Well, the price of admission stands at an even 100K. So a person is apt to think if I just had purchased that Healey 20 years ago for 20K. The bottom line is that even if you had the money is still not all that wonderful. Not bad mind you for a car but almost any other investment would have done better when you factor in the cost of insurance storage and repairs and upkeep for the car. What I am getting at is the S2000 might at sometime become a collector car and a money maker but few of us will be around to see it. Why? Its going to take years and years and there are just too many of them to really become all that unusual. Enjoy the driving is my answer. Let the grand kids worry about how much Grand Dad's funny little car is worth. The trick to making money on collector cars is short term not long. You gotta pick the car that is going to jump hard in the next couple years. If you can do that then there is your chance to make money in the collector car market. What car is going to "Star" in a movie or take a lead in a TV show. Or just all of a sudden get hot. If you can do that then you can do alright. But its a lot like playing the stock market. Most people have real trouble making money in the short term. It can be done but for most of us the stock market works "Ok" for long term investment. Collector car the same. If you keep one long enough you can expect to make some money. Problem is with cars, unlike stocks, you have significant expenses. I say drivem for the fun and just figure you are doing better then average because they do not depreciately as badly as most (especially if you didn't buy new). JEH
