'Nothin' to base this on except too little past experience Abe, but I'm pretty sure that an equal expanse of aluminum is lighter than an equivilent expanse of carbon fibre. When you get to the beefier, structural, attaching ends, that weight difference would probably increase.
As for the unlikelihood of large, beautifully curved expanses of aluminum, (that require manhandlin' to put in place n' remove) remainin' unblemished . . I don't think that needs any embellishment for any of us.
In a perfect world (even one that has Stewie garaged whenever possible) aluminum panels r' somethin' that you've jus' godda accept r' gonna possibly catch damage. Pretty easily.
Why they chose to go with the metal? Probably more because it holds paint than because of it's weight savin' advantages.
And, yes, this is all another case'a the world accordin' to Java. The reason that they went with aluminum could jus' as likely be because the person who signs the requisition forms isn't exactly sure howda spell fibre, r' maybe they got saki on their favorite tie the night before. The answers to "why" r' jus' way too reason-defyin'.
Be well.
