I was cruising around in a 53 Chrysler a few weeks back with a fluid drive setup in it. (not a big stretch from the Wilson pre-selector) With the old Chrysler, you only have to use the clutch to change direction.

I'm multitasking.......

The Wilson was electric and was more or less a toggle switch with an H gate. I remember the old fluid drive. The most exotic car I have driven was a 1924 Rolls Royce Phaeton. The car was huge, the brakes were barely. There was no synchrmesh and it had a leather cone clutch. A collector asked me to drive it to the railroad station to be shipped. Didn't matter if you used the clutch or not and if the signal changed I just put my foot down and prayed no was was coming through! I read complaints about the stewie gearbox. You havn't lived untill you have driven a crash box, which the original Porshces had by the way. And they were overpriced at $3,900.
