american cars are trash... note thats why dodge ford and chevy say they are the best selling american cars on the road... lmao cause they cant compete with foriegn trucks... and lets not even talk about the crappy cars... no styling whatsoever...
Tell them to look at Consumer Reports "Best and Worst" cars. Funny how most of the best are Japanese and worst are American (in general). I'll stick with my Hondas and Toyotas.
Me:
'01 S2000 63k mi.
'91 Toyota pickup 243k mi.

In a capitalist economy, the consumer votes with their purchasing power. People choose cars for many reasons, and if North American manufacturers made anything that could compete with the s2000, I'm sure it would be considered. The truth is, they don't.
The closest thing is the Ion redline or the Solstice. Both cars did not compare to the S2000 in magazine testing because of build quality and lesser handling. Most other industry publications compare the s2000 to a BMW z4 or a Porsche Boxster, not the rental car fleet fodder that is the current staple of North American manufacturers.

You should ask them if they know what country their chevy or ford is made. I usually say as soon as they build a car worth buying I will go domestic. There are a few domestics id own but I hate when people complain about buying imported vehicles.

Not only is it compared to Z4 and Boxter but it did better than them in almost ever one of the comparisons (handleing, speed, price ect.).
well nowadays all domestic car companys are building their cars outside of the united states (mexico) and all the foreign car companys are building inside the united states (toyota, honda, and mitsubishi). So does it really matter what the make is?,,,lol
Rick, I think it all comes down to R&D and technology. Japan's Big 2 seem to be ahead of America's Big 3. I can't believe when one of my patients is so stoked to get a new Chevy, Dodge or Ford and 2000 miles later it needs a new tranny or something. Sure, it's under warranty, but who's to say it's not gonna happen again.
I've beat the crap out of my Toyota truck and only had to replace the clutch once, the radiator twice (not the greatest radiators, but then again, you are supposed to flush them every now and then), tires, brakes and oil. Oh yea, the timing chain tensioner once and a couple of batteries. Not bad for 243k on the odo.
There are American cars I like, I personally trust Honda and Toyota more.

QUALITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't really care where it comes from as long as it's not a piece of crap. It just rubs me the wrong way to spend $40,000 for a vehicle that has to be returned to the dealer over and over again to get things fixed.
The Chevys and Fords I've owned have been problems. The Hondas and Toyotas have not been problems. Easy decision.

If it weren't for pressure from overseas, Detroit would still be using technology from the 1930s. People better wake up to the fact that a global economy is happening. Who makes their tv's, vcr's microwaves, etc, etc?
i agree 100%, if it wassent for that competition we would be paying more and getting much less from the american auto makers.

And lets not forget that GM recently issued a recall for every single Solstice & Sky for some sort of fluid failure that could "cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle" As far as I am concerned there is NOTHING and I mean NOTHING in the same class as the S2000 as far as Value, Performance, Balance, Handling, Price, build quality, styling & reliability are concerned. Like Car & Driver said in their "Breaking The Rules" comparison test in 2001 when the S2000 beat the Mercedes SLK, BMW Z3M & Porsche Boxter "We did not include the Mazda Miata in our test because the S2000 would have it for lunch and not even bother to spit out the bones" GOD I love these cars!

Tell them to look at the "source" data on the detail sheets on their cars at the dealer. It may be "final assembled" in the US but the parts are all foreign... Especially the little chip that makes it run, there hasn't been a chip plant here since the dot com bust.
Neil,
Let them drive it and then see what they say. I've let a few guys drive mine and they were all pleasantly surprised. If they don't like it then it's their loss... Good luck, this tends to happen a lot when you drive an S2K. I am reminded of the phrase, "People always fear what they don't understand..."

My first car I bought 6 years ago, I sold to a friend. 1994 Accord. Still running with 248,000+ miles. Wonder what would have happened if I sold him a Cavalier.. LOL
Consumer Reports shows that even most German cars are poor on reliability. The Mercedes and VW's score pretty bad. I was a VW and BMW guy before. Now I like my cars from the land of the rising sun.
The reason I chose the civic, I flipped the autotrader search over, and searched for the lowest price civic and lowest price cavalier. The lowest price civic was 4k, and had well over 200k miles, while the lowest price cavalier was 2k and had only 125k. Even though the civic was older, I knew I could keep it longer.
The car I drove before Stewie was a 2002 civic SI. I had 10k to spend, and was looking for something in the sport compact department. It boiled down to two cars, an 05 cavalier with 12k miles, or an 02 civic si with 58k.

there not all bad, Vettes are pretty pimp! vipers, camaros, mustangs, trans ams.
tell them that you did buy a car made in America, i think most of the Hondas are made here...if they dont like that refer to Sonic's reply..
My boss, at my last job pointed out a large clean oil patch where my car had been parked. It has never leaked a drop and on further investigation it was discovered that a Chevy van had parked there before me. He continued to deride me about it not being American until he road in it and then changed his tune.

I do beleive that all s2000 are made and imported from Japan. mine was, cerial number began with a J. That's one reason that they're reliable.
I'm with Silver.
There'z a bunch'a Amuricun Arn that, while they can't supply me with the infamous Stewie grin, would undoubtedly be a whole lodda fun ta drive n' in that provide their own brand'a grin.
Some'a the magazine writerz've got their noses a wee bit too elevated ta my way'a thinkin'.
The American car may still have a bit of the road-goin' tractor in it's genes, but they're not all the "beneath-us" rides that some'a the rag-hacks would have you believe they are.
But then, if we believed everythin' Madison Avenue slathered all over us, we'd only be seen in Armani, hobbily workin' on classic wooden Chris-Craftz, similarly classic 16 cylinder phaeton Cadooz n' walkin' dogz whut looked more like stick-legged hairbagz n' dogz.
I can't get inta that real well. I put my nose that high up n' I keep walkin' inta *@&#.
