Las Vegas - Red Rock Canyon/Valley of Fire
Las Vegas - Red Rock Canyon/Valley of Fire
We talked about this on our January drive, so I figured I'd post about it to see what kind of interest there is to do it. I figured we could stay a couple days in either May or September and drive Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire outside of Vegas.
Red Rock Canyon is located about 17 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip and features a one-way 13-mile scenic drive (26 miles up and back).
Valley of Fire State Park is located 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15 and on exit 75. It was voted as the Best Park/Nature Area and the Best Scenic Drive in Southern Nevada by the reader's of the Nevada Magazine.
We did these drives for S2KDays '05 and it was really cool.
Jen was looking at hotel room rates and they are very reasonable in mid May. Her original thought was to go Sunday-Wednesday for the cheaper rates, but I don't know how people feel about taking off from work. I thought maybe going Saturday-Tuesday would be better for those that can't ake off as much time. I think the Friday-Sunday thing is out of the question unless people want to deal with 20 hours of sitting in traffic.
We could drive there Saturday and meet up in the early afternoon to drive Red Rock Canyon since it is close. Check in after the drive, take a nap (or play craps), eat dinner (or play craps), and then play craps.
Sunday, we would get together early and eat some breakfast, drive Valley of Fire, and come back, eat and play some craps. Drive home Monday morning in no traffic after eating breakfast and playing craps.
Anyone interested??

Looking at dates, May 10-12 looks like a good time before it gets too hot. The best deal I've been able to find is on Orbitz for the Luxor for $135/night for a 4-star hotel. The Monte Carlo is $144, but they are closed until further notice because of the fire on Friday.
Valley of Fire is one beautiful place. Too bad I'll either be out of the country or on the wrong side of the US. If I was anywhere close, I"d be there...just for the scenery (okay, and the friendship, too)
Sure...it's rather easy. It took me a really long time to learn how and now, knowing the game, I feel like an idiot that it took me so long. Jen wants to go for a longer time, Saturday to Tuesday so as to have more time to do some things. It will also make the nightly rate a little bit lower.
Yes, cheers from me, I'd be happy to help. Don't worry about the midweek price, you can usually find a good rate somewhere on the strip, and almost always off the strip, for weekends - except for the Nascar weeks, the NFR, and some big conventions, that is. May should be great, and it's peak topless weather! Woo-hoo!
Speaking of vegas I will be out there with you guys may 1st-7th. Im gonna be staying at mandalay bay does anyone know if its nice there? Anyways I dont think I will have much time to meet anyone but I will let ya know. Sadly my car will be back east.
I just picked up some seats from a guy downtown, you want my old ones?
Sorry, couldn't resist...
I'm trying to figure out how to keep mine safe now, I'd never heard of that happening before except for a stolen & stripped car.
But hey, SD folks, you're still welcome to come up - you need to get here before the heat gets turned on!
