I guess I have been lucky as I have never in 30yrs of driving had to change a flat tire on the highway etc, and with the technology available I'm sure we will possibly see the end of a "spare tire" being included with new vehicle purchases

Seriously, how much would removing that spare save you. .2 miles per gallon. Dosen't seem worth it to me for that "just in case" feeling of a flat tire at 2am while stuck in BFE. If you find out anything substantial let us know.
