About the "notchiness" of the shifter when cold bjur: most mechanicals r' a wee bit (some moreso than others) reluctant to oparate smoothly when the oil involved is cold. Units r' usually set up for peak operational efficiency with the oil at operating temperature, as that's where most of the work gets done.
So, when jus' 'bout anything mechanical is cold, while it should be expected to operate satisfactorily, chances it won't operate as well as when the oil is warmed up.
Especially when it's cold outside, a period of pampering (in-use warm-up) should preceed any serious use until the li'l fella's at least given the chance to wake up.
Be well.
