You should be looking at the tire manufacturer to answer your question. Each tire manufacturer will list a minimum rim width, maximum rim width, and optimal rim width, for each tire they make. Note these numbers are not guaranteed to be identical from tire to tire, brand to brand. In other words, there is no universal answer to your question, but getting that answer is trivial with a quick trip to the mfg's website.
