If you choose to race on the street which you shouldn't (we're all probably guilty of it, to an extent) make sure it's one of the roads your most familiar with that doesn't have crosstraffic, streetlights, residences, etc. Interference and driver error is the problem. Avoid driving side by side and maintain your line. Never go to the streetraces. They'll take your car, even for watching it's still illegal (in California). I know people who found that out the hard way.
Not to say you shouldn't have some fun when the right car comes along (don't race anything you don't have respect for and know you can beat) and the conditions are right, but you really do have to pick and choose your fights. For the cop factor and the safety factor.
