I noticed the same thing one time with my year 2000 S2000 (25K miles). I had been running the car hard and when I got out of the car and walked around to the passengers side of the car I noticed a hot smell. I am assuming that I gotten the exhaust hotter then typical and I was burning off a little oil which had accumulated on the exhaust either from the road or the recent oil change. I suspect the original posted just had something similar burning off.
