2000-2003 Vs. 2004-2005 Engine Speed
I remember test driving an S2000 when they first came out in the fall of 1999. The engine went to 9000 rpm in 1st gear effortlessly, as a matter of fact it was so smooth it felt like a jet engine. I recently drove two 2005's because I want to get one. One was new and the other was a demonstrater with 3000 mi. on it. The engine didn't seem as smooth or as eager to rev. as the very first one I drove. I also noticed the same difference between a BMW 225CI and a BMW 330CI and the only difference between the two engines is that the BMW 330CI has a longer stroke. Has anyone noticed this as well and is 10 ft-lbs of additional torque worth losing 1000 rpm and an engine that loves to run. I wonder if the longer stroke in the 2004 and 2005 is the reason anti-vibration engine mounts were installed in the newer models.

Heh. This issue has been debated to death at S2ki.com. I guess the way it works out is American Honda believes a bit more torque and gearing to take advantage of it is going to appeal to North American drivers. Meanwhile, the rest of the world still sees the appeal of the F20c.
FWIW, I think the F22c revs just as smoothly. If I were in the market for a new S2000, I'd have no problem getting the lower revving motor and be quite happy with it. If Honda actually offered both engines I'd take the F20c. If I wanted torque, I'd get a powerstroke diesel. |
