High octane Gasoline
I read in another subject of the forum about using 91 octane fuel.That sounds weird because mine has a lable in the refueling compartment that says only use 98 or higher gasoline.I use the 100 ultimate by BP.
Between 98 and 100 i see a very big difference.I cant imagine how the car would run with 91 octane.With the 100 i reached the top speed of 258 km\h on the meter and believe me i'm not a guy that likes to show off.My car is a 2000 model.I am a 1974 model! |

Hi Apos;
I'm guessin' that what we have here is a difference in rating systems. I belive that our (stateside) owners manuals call for 91 octane or better. I can't reliably quote what the highest octane ratin' that we can get at the pumps stateside is (someone with that spec will be along shortly), but I do know that they folded up the tent on my old Sunoco 260 (96 octane)back in the late '70s r' so, n' that, at the time was the hottest stuff available from a pump. (AvGas n' racin' fuel were available, but not at the normal pumps) Today, if I'm not mistaken, Sunoco still has the hottest juice available stateside n' I believe it's 94 octane. So, if your S2 is sportin' a label about octane at a 98 rating it's probably jus' the result of our different, local octane ratin' systems. Be well. |

Correct.
In Australia we refer to fuel with the RON (Research Octane Number). There is another type of Octane, called "Motor Octane Number" (MON), which is a better measure of how the fuel behaves when under load.Depending on the composition of the fuel, the MON of a modern fuel will be about 10 points lower than the RON. Normally fuel specifications require both a minimum RON and a minimum MON. I believe in the US, the rating they give fuel is an average of the RON + MON (ie RON+MON/2). Therefore this usually works out ot be approx 5 points lower than what we have listed in Australia. In Australia the best available pump fuels are: BP Ultimate - 98 RON Shell Optimax - 98 RON Caltex Vortex - 98 RON |
