How should I beef up on my tuning knowledge
I've posted a few times already on my 01' S2K. I just traded it in last week for an 02' S2K with only 24K miles. One owner who barely drove it. Got the metallic blue color WITh matching interior. All I'm saying is I will never own another sports car.
That being said, I am interested in learning this car inside and out from top to bottom and this site has been a big help so far (particularly Halo, but thanks to all) However, I am relatively new to the whole import tuning game, but I have fallen in love with it and find it fascinating and very enjoyable to study. What should I do to increase my knowledge? Anyone have a particular book or DVD to get? I am pretty much at the beginner stage right now. How did all of you get to where you're at knowledge-wise? |

One place to start might be taking a basic auto mechanics course if you have the time. It's good to know the background for how things work before you go modding them. You might want to pick up one of the import tuner mags (or even domestic tuner mags like Mustangs and Fast Fords). While much of the stuff in these mags is just sales pitches loosely hidden as parts reviews, you can still learn a bunch about what's out there, what works, what doesn't.
BTW, I appreciate the props, but I'm hardly any kind of tuner expert. Just a car enthusiast. |

No. 'Gotta agree 100% with Eddy. Halo's "just an enthusiast" like li'l Stewie's "just another little car". Thanks where thanks is due Halo. (Sorry, but you're jus' gonna hafta tough it out)
Be well. JJ |

Import tuning mags may give you an idea of sort of parts that people are putting on cars. Generally most imports are turbos, and not all parts will apply or have the same effect. You will see words like "cold air intake" "individual throttle bodies" "NOS" etc and then you can investigate yourself what these parts are and how they work.
For instance, there is a bucket load of reading on just the different types of superchargers, how they operate, the benfits of them and their history. Then you can get into great detail about Adiabatic efficiency, impeller design etc... As posted above, the main idea is to understand how your engine works, and what the various parts of the engine do. Then research what the various modified parts do and their applications. |

Okay folks, help out the old guy: I see this term "tuning" bein' thrown aroun' alot n' I'm get the impression that it doesn't mean exactly what it used to mean. I'd appreciate it if someone could bring me up to speed on what exactly is bein' referred to when the term "tuning" is bein' used.
Thanx muchly. JJ |

I would say that now "tuning" generally refers to modifying the engine to improve performance, as opposed to the old meaning of adjusting timing to get the engine run according to manufacturers specs.

I find that it is used a bit too liberally too. Some so-called 'tuners' throw some crappy fart can exhaust, intake and body kit on a Civic and call that 'tuning.'

I agree. I prefer "modding" as it does not imply that what you are doing will have any benefits.

The "tuning" I know was just another way of sayin' that you were allowin' it to make as much HP as it could. Sometimes for everyday use n' sometimes for a particular track or event. I know engine tuning and I understand suspension tuning, but some of the stuff that I've seen referred to as tuning, that just makes it look or sound different, really had me scratchin' my head.
Much appreciate the help guys. Be well. |
