OEM Tires
How many miles are you guys getting out of the origional tires? I just noticed that the tread wear rating is really low on my new S's tires. Lower than any other tire I have ever had.

Also have your tires gotten noisy after putting some miles on them? I had a similar tire on my mustang and they were really loud after about 15,000 miles.

What tires are you currently running? 04+ models OEM tires are different to the 99-03 models.
15,000 kms is about right for the stock S02's (99-03 models). I would not recommend trying to get much more out of them, especially if it rains in your area. |

i think 06 is same as 04 ? if it is the tire re050 then i don't reccomend, this tire last very short, and no grip at all in the rain or snow.

'You want high mileage tires n' you wanna keep from endin' up in a ditch r' some other undesireable location, you've 1 choice: You don't drive the car like it was designed (and purchased . . . I'm assumin' here, but I'll go out on a limb) to be driven. I guess it's not all bad: that kinda drivin' is usually accompanied by no speeders and compliments on your maturity (if that's your cuppa tea)
'You want to drive the car like it was meant to be driven you use sticky (r' in keepin' with the current topic "low-mileage") tires. Oh, sure there's middle ground with hoops that'll give PRETTY good mileage n' be PRETTY sticky. I believe that they come under the headin' of "yawners". The kinda tires that always leave you wonderin' if that last corner could'a been taken quicker r' cleaner. Or maybe when your spinnin' finally comes to a stop (hopefully without damage), wonderin' if maybe you shoulda opted for the stickiest rubber that was available. Would you purchase tires for the R1 because they had a longer tread life? No difference. Be well. |

I will not be replacing my tires with S-02's when the time comes. And here is why...
I drive very spirited a large portion of the time. One of the joys of the car. There are numerous tires on the market that provide near S-02 levels of grip with VASTLY improved wet traction. It is a well known fact that the S-02's are piss-poor in the rain. No getting around that. I have had a few hairy situations in the rain and I need more assurance. Needless to say...the S-02 is one of the best dry-grip street tires ever made. I will be replacing the tires with Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's. They will provide 95%+ of the S-02 dry-grip and over 125% of the S-02's wet grip. They also have a much higher tread-wear rating, are less noisy, and cost quite a bit less. It's less of a sacrifice and more of a "performance-minded adjustment". Assuming your tires are matched correctly (Same tire front and rear, CORRECT REAR TIRE SIZE!!! 245's in anything but the S-02's) I do not feel that the car will become "unsafe". |

It all boils down to the choice we make as to how we primarily see ourselves usin' our cars:
the appeal of max-grip in the best circumstances of dry weather or opting for better grip in the less-than-prime conditions of the wet. Unfortuneately, to the best of my knowledge, there ain't no hoops out there that retain the best grip in both conditions. If there were we'd be passin' that info on n' we'd all be wearin' the same brand name on our tires. So we makes as educated and as researched a choice as we can, we pays our money n' we heads into the nearest chicane, drivin' within the abilities of the choice we made. The common denominator is that at the end of our shift we're all hopefully intact, thrilled with our ability to carve corners n' smilin' ta beat the band. I'll drink ta that. Be well. |
