when top is up, left side latch rattles uncontrollably....

is this an easy fix or does it mean a much more expensive repair is required?

As far as I know, there arent any adjustments that can be made on the latch. Sounds to me like replacing it is the only option. I dont think it will be a very expensive part to replace and they are fairly simple to install. Depending on the year of your car, it may still be under warranty. If it is an early model, I believe there was a service bulletin that may be able to save you. That doesnt mean you will automatically get the repair for free, but it give you an arguement at a dealer for some goodwill assistance. PM me if you have anymore questions. (btw, I think the service bulletin was for the latch actually braking, but if your car is the right year, you could always say this is fatigue and will eventually lead to the braking of the latch)
Laters.

As there's no adjustment, is it possible that whatever the latch "compresses" when it locks down just isn't there, or, maybe jus' not doin' what it's supposed to anymore?

A simple option is to wrap a bit of tape (eg electrical tape) around it.

or you can try this:

maybe u can try this, patch the inside of the latch with some soft resistence kind of material ! by doing this u can make it tighter and maybe it will close the gap so it doesn't vibrate to make the sound!!!!
