Advice needed, about to purchase S2K
Hi guys, I'm new here. I am nearly certain I am going to buy an S2K wihtin 2 months. I think it will be an '01-'03. I am looking for something fun to drive and dependable as it will be my daily driver. Should I be aware of any problems to check out? Is this a good option for daily driving? All advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jason

welcome,
My 2000 S2000 is my daily driver and it's great, gas milage is not to bad but look what you get to drive everyday good luck on your hunt, it's worth every penny! ,Morgan P.S. check out the top for any problems(wind noise, if it goes down correctlyand check how it seals to the side windows) check for cracks in the back window, and if you can take it to a good shop to have them take a look at it

I'd skip the 01 and go 02 or newer: Glass rear window, slightly better stereo, improved oil jet bolts (if the latter half of the 02 production run and thereafter), few other minor tweaks.

So a '02- newer has a glass rear window or only later '02 models?
Thanks |

Hi S2;
Agree with Halo's assessment of later version over early, but there are those who are avid early version fans too. What that says is that you're not goin' wrong with either. Mine's been a daily driver (well, except for bike use) since I picked it up and I can find no fault with that formula. One thing that can make things a little interesting though is snow. I don't know where you're hailin' from, but you do hafta consider that in deeper snow (our ground clearance ain't much) you've jus' godda have another means of gettin' 'roun'. And lastly, you godda remember that you're invisible. Most couch-potatos in their Titanica LX 4-wheel drives (Oops! Sorry. SUVs) don't often strain themselves to look down for anything on the road that might be below (you can take that either way) them. For whatever reason, stuck in traffic when one of them decides to maneuver without the benefit of tugboats could have you become so much bat guano in the treads of someones boot. Good luck n' be well. |

Thanks JJ,
I currently live in South Carolina, so I don't see much snow. No worries there. As to those whacks in the gargantua SUV's, well there everywhere. I guess I'll be cautious of them. Anyway, I am really looking forward to finding a Silver, either one, '01-'02 maybe even an '03. Are there any reliability issues with such years? Thanks |

It breaks down like this:
MY 00-01: Plastic rear window MY 02-06: Glass rear window As far as reliability issues, I would try to get the 03. This was the last year of the AP1 chassis (9K redline 2L engine, 4.57 final drive, 16" wheels, no clutch delay) and had been tweaked through the years to deal with some of the minor issues of the first few years. That said, ALL the years are at the top of the reliability for sporty cars given their year, far better than a Boxster say. The older the car, the more owners, miles, and... well you get the idea. |

Frankly speakin' S2 (n' as much as this particular Ford man is loathe to admit) it's a Honda, n' as such, unmolested, it's pretty much bullet-proof.
Reliability-wize, I'd suspect that a car that's spent it's life in stock form would be damned-near as reliable as a new one. It's the cars that have been altered unwisely, or worse, unsafely that taint the reputation of a solidly reliable, good handlin' car. As you're goin' used, I'd put more emphasis on knowledge that the car wasn't altered unwisely in it's lifetime than I would in what color it is. As the buyer, you're in the catbird seat. You've got the money. The sellers want that money and for whatever reason want to be rid of the Stewie that they're sellin'. Find out, and, if possible, verify, as much of the history of the car you're lookin' to buy. Once you put your money down, it's problems are your problems. Good luck, keep us posted n' be well. |

Thanks guys. Your advice will not fall on deaf ears. It's so nice to have a "support group" like this. I'll be sure to let you know when I bring it home. Thanks to all.
