Do some reserach on the differences between the AP1 (00-03) and the AP2 (04-present) so you can get an idea of the positives and negatives of each. There are not any major changes, but some people like the 'softer' suspension and like the extra torque (AP2), while others like the more 'go kart' like suspension and the 9,000 RPM redline (AP1). There are other cosmetic differences that some people like and others do not.

As for engine mods, there are many for both models, but few do much to truely increase HP and TQ other than boost. Honda did a really nice job of getting just about all it could out of the stock 2.0 and 2.2 motors. You can get 5-20 HP out of different mixes of mods, but to get the high end of 20+, you need some serious money and tuning. To get 100+ HP, you need boost.

As for what to look for when buying used, check the rear window on teh 00-01 since they are plastic. Other than that, there isn't anything I can think of off the top of my head that causes concern to many owners in general. Heck, it's a Honda for goodness sake.

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.

You'll love yourself for buying this car. As for downsides, trunk space and no backseat; but who needs those anyway?
