Engine Ping

Is it normal for the engine to make a "ping" sound after I turn it off? It's been cold in VA lately - not sure if the weather makes it ping more then if the weather was warmer. For about 10 minutes after I turn off the engine I hear a "ping" sound. Most people I spoke to about it says it normal. I also own a Harley Ulta Classic and it makes the same sound after turning the engine off - so I am kind of agreeing that it's OK - but I figured I'd ask the experts on these forums for an opinion.

Yea man your cool, its while its running if it makes that sound under the hood you should worry. More than likly its your exhaust cooling down rapidly.

As mentioned, usually it is the exhaust making the cooling sounds, not the engine.

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.

Ed, the coolin' is usually described as a "tickin'" sound. But everybody's got their own noises to make to the guys on the other side of the counter. (They really do love us for it)
But, the finer points of describin' noises aside, I'd also hafta go with the hot metal coolin' down.
Be well.

Does the engine shut off immediately or does it tend to run on for a few seconds before quitting?

Are you driving with the A?C on and then parking it over a drip tray in the garage? The water output from the A/C dripping onto a tray could produce a sound like that.

Otherwise I would agree that it tends to be more of a tick usually, as the car cools down.

When most people talking about "pinging" (detonation/knocking) they usually refer to driving the engine under load (eg accelerating or going up a hill) and hear a sound usually described like rattling keys or marbles.
