153 ft-lbs Torque...

Hello all. I am looking into buying a S2000. Most likely used (2001, 2002). I test drove the car and loved it. But the Torque seems low to me. Does anybody else feel the Torque is low?

Also, what would be the best way to raise my torque without getting into Turbo or Super Charger? I was going to start out with the basic, Header, Intake, and exhaust.

Thanx.

The s2000 does not have bucket loads of torque, which is one reason why it revs so high (due to engine design).

Essentially basic bolt on mods would not do a lot to improve torque and the only way to really improve it is via turbo or supercharger. The other option would be something like a stroker kit.

Another option would be to change the final drive ratio, whilst this does not actualy change the engine torque at all, it lowers the overall gearing of the car giving better acceleration down low.

Yep, that's all it has. This car was designed with the same philosophy as a sport bike or F1 car... you need to rev it to make it go. If you look at dyno charts, however, it has one of the flattest torque curves all the way to 8800rpm and that makes the S unique among other sporty cars.

The cetrifugal type superchargers that are available (for example Comptech) are NOT designed to generate low end torque. As a matter of fact, they do very little to the shape of the torque curve until you are in the middle of the powerband. Bolt-ons (CAI, cat back and so on) won't get you much gains. Turbo-ing the car WILL generate additional torque.

Not trying to talk you out of it here, but if it's torque you're after, I wouldn't even consider the S, but a larger displacement, lower revving V6 or V8. Think of it like the difference between choosing a sport bike over a large V twin. They're both a blast, but take a different approach to get you there.

yea that sounds about right. to increase torque you either need force induction or a 2.2/2.3 liter stoker kit. both will cost you a hefty amount
of $$$

Thanks for the replies. I am definitely going to get this car. I loved it. I also strongly believe that Honda's VTEC technology is the best out there. Very reliable and fast.

Thanks once again. Also, when I do get it, I will post some comparisons between my S2000 and the 35th Anniversary Camaro with the LS1 and SLP package. This is my girls car. We will be racing and comparing.

Should be an interesting comparison. I know some people will say "no way, one is a drag monster, the other is a track car/roadster" But I say, you can compary ANY two vehicles, just because they are made with different philosophy doesn't mean you can't race 'em. People have always tried to race my R1 in cars LOL.

Hey, that's intresting, I actually felt the same way, except it was the '04 2.2 S2000.

The reason why you probably felt the slight disappointment with lack of torque is exactly that your coming from a large displacement engine.

I myself am coming from a VW VR6 I swapped in my 91 GTI. I just loved the low end of that car but it was time to move on. So when I tested the 04, I was somewhat expecting the pull back, although not as strong, the mid to highend was where it was at. Not to mention the double wishbone setup.....man, so much better then the VW.

Geez, I felt bad though, the car I tested only had 80 some odd miles on it and I was already taking it to VTEC. My theory is too, it should be a lot stronger once the car is broken in properly because I was driving my buddy's RSX-S and thinking, hmm, this car pulls nicely, probably the S2 needs to be broken in before I expect the world of it.

Sorry, my little spheel, just wanted to relate to yah.
