I'm under the impression that the big fwd iron (like an ancient Cord, Philiam ) used a type of double-carden-joint at each of the front axle shafts. Basically a Constant Velocity Joint, but not bathed in heavy grease, and without roller bearings.

In cadillac / oldsmobile , you do see cv joints with the 325-4L and the TH425 transaxles in the 1970's, but even those shafts look extremely heavy duty compared to what your typical front wheel drive car looks like nowadays.

jagg

Track and weather conditions make a BIG difference. Then again, I wasn't thinking about a 1/4 drag race, I was thinking about a tad bit longer race.

The Cord was a heckuva car. It had the Wilson pre selector gear shift mounted on the column. Pick a gear and when you are ready to shift, just tap the clutch.

If you find yourself near Auburn, Indiana, The Auburn, Cord, Dusenberg museum is a worthwhile stop. IMHO, I think the coffin nose Cord is one of the prettiest cars of all time.

It's funny how we have three different conversations going on in this thread.

When replying to a previous post you think yours is next in line, but someone posts in the meantime. Just call it multi tasking.

I'd love to take the helm of an Auburn Speedster........just to say I did it.
I was cruising around in a 53 Chrysler a few weeks back with a fluid drive setup in it. (not a big stretch from the Wilson pre-selector) With the old Chrysler, you only have to use the clutch to change direction.

I'm multitasking.......

The Wilson was electric and was more or less a toggle switch with an H gate. I remember the old fluid drive. The most exotic car I have driven was a 1924 Rolls Royce Phaeton. The car was huge, the brakes were barely. There was no synchrmesh and it had a leather cone clutch. A collector asked me to drive it to the railroad station to be shipped. Didn't matter if you used the clutch or not and if the signal changed I just put my foot down and prayed no was was coming through! I read complaints about the stewie gearbox. You havn't lived untill you have driven a crash box, which the original Porshces had by the way. And they were overpriced at $3,900.

Oldest one I've ever driven is a '29 Model A..Great shape and in it's original configuration. Was more fun to ride in the rumble seat. For a youngin' like me, it was a scary driver. Bad brakes....What brakes?

Rarest one.....A Packard Hawk ('56 or 58, my minds failing) .....very few of those around. Very much like the Studebaker Hawks, and made at the end of Packard's run in this world.

Very Best Regards,

Not to worry Java, one good thing about gettin older is the memories that things trigger.

When going to high school I delivered car parts after school in a model A pickup truck. Sounded like the main bearings were on vacation, but it kept on ticking.

I'm posting a few pics of my most unusual ride.

My youngest brother is with American Honda. He's got the connections. Interesting experience, like being in a boat only higher. Better than getting high.

Great pics Philiam, I'm afraid I'm unable to top that at the present time........but rest assured I'm always working on it.

If you were in high school, using a Model A.......well, I feel like a total kid. Sir, I bow to your experience and wisdom.

I'm off to see if Mommy's done cutting the crust off my peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Very Best Regards,

I want to make it perfectly clear...it was a used model A. My first car was a 35 ford coupe with no 2nd gear, painted black with a brush. Worked after school and weekends in a gas station @ 50 cents an hour to buy it for $150.

I have had a lot of experience. Wisdom? That's another thing.

No worries Philiam,

I can go one better. Imagine owning all THREE of the vehicles built in the same factory: S2000, NSX and.................... the Insight!! I am an NSX away. Notice two of the three are not built any longer?!?! What does that say about our S?

How about the S2000, Honda Fit & NSX!? I have two of those... LOL

The only care I would ever get is either Elenor (Gone in 60 Seconds) or a NSX. Definately Elenor FIRST!!!

When I think of an Integra, for some reason I picture a 16 yr old kid with a coffee can for an exhaust! RSX's are overrated IMO. TSX is nice as a second car, definately not to replace Stewie! And I will agree with you on the NSX!!
