2002 S2k

hello All...i totalled my 2000 toyota camry v6 last week and I've always had my heart on an S2k. I found a really clean one for about 15K. It has about 50K miles on it and is 2002 model. Can you just tell me more about it? Have there been any major recurring problems? I'd really appreciate some speedy help as I'm going to check it out tomorrow morning and it' pretty far away.

First off, sorry about the total, way bummer.

As for the 2002 with 50K, I traded that one in a few months ago, no major problems except for the snake infestation in the trunk.

Sorry, couldn't resist... 2002 was a great year for the AP1, it had some improvements from the first couple of years. I haven't heard of any major problems on any S2K yet, and I'm on my second one (still happy to pieces with it!). Good luck and welcome!

Well, they don't hold up well if you run them in to things. Other than that, they are very durable. They are Hondas. That's a good price for 2002. This is a good time to buy one. Make sure you have the right fluids in the right places, don't abuse em and they last a long time. My biggest problem is getting to my destination, cauz then I have to stop driving.

That depends on you. Take time to learn it. It's a different car to drive. You don't drive a race car flat out till you have time in the cockpit. This is a race car. Arguably the best bang for the buck on the road. It's prudent to learn to drive defensively in traffic. Having spent a lot of time in various cars as part of my livelihood I developed some positive habits. Assume that car or truck next to you can't see you. You're invisible. Watch the front wheel. If it starts to turn, speed up or back off. They are coming over. Don't follow on the other guys bumper. Maybe you can stop quickly, but how about the guy behind you? I've driven Porsches, Alfa Romeo, BMW among others. The only accident I ever had was sitting at a stop light, when someone plowed in to my rear(the car that is). The car is very safe, because you can drive out of trouble. Drive it like a teen ager and you're better off in an SUV.

And tha'ts my sermon for the day.

It's worth being excited about, or we all wouldn't be here! The only thing to watch out for is yourself - no offense intended, I mean it for me, too - it's a race car, and Phil's advice is spot on. For that matter, he pointed out the only problem I've ever had, which is other drivers not seeing me, and it's proportional to the size of their rig... I've learned to stay out of the spots that they don't seem to look in and have managed not to get mangled.
Oh, yeah, and look out for the secret compartment, you'll never know what you find in there in a used stewie!

I have a 2002. I have had no complaints and no problems that were not self induced. 2002 was the year that the most S2000's were sold.

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.

Have had great luck with my '02 so far. From my experience the only problem you'll have it you maintain it correctly, and drive it rationally, is keeping brakes and tires on it. Not much else wears out on the S.
It's a much more raw car, and that much more engaging to drive, than your punched up camry. You'll fall in love with it.....For 15K, you won't find a more capable automobile.

Good luck with the lookin',

hey... thanks so much for the help guys. A few more questions:

1. Is the RWD going to be a big issue, considering that I live in Michigan?
2. I havent' been able to find any information regarding crash test ratings...anything?
3. What is the degree of insulation for the roof top? Is it enough to last out Michigan winters?
Thanks so much

Sorry k it's Saturday and we're all out drivin'. It's 43 degrees here tonight so I can't fairly say how it would hold up in your parts, sorry. The Honda heater rocks for me, though! Be warm and best of luck.

With the proper tires and driving style, it shouldn't be a problem. RWD is no better or worse than FWD when driven correctly.

I haven't seen anything either. However, if you look at the crash test ratings for the earliest model you can find, that should tell you. There haven't been that many structural changes in the overall car.

Umm, insulation...I've heard the word but not in conjunction with S2k's and soft tops. There is no insulation really, but the heater is extremely good. Make sure you clean any snow off of the top before you drive (parking in a garage is even better).

ok...so last night I went to bed and it was snowing very lightly...I figured we'd wake up with an inch or two...considering I've had finals over the past two weeks, I haven't had time to check the weather....I woke up and there's about 2 feet of snow!!!! Now that I'm in the market for a car, I've been paying relatively close attention to how diffeent cars handle in the snow. I walked just outside the subdivision and saw an SLK 320 (RWD) slipping around like crazy, and then some subaru forester drives past like it was the middle of August. The SLK has more ground clearance than does the S2K....SO, I'm going to take you're guys on this: Should I buy the S2K as a daily driver or not? I commute to college everyday, about a 15min drive in regular weather and I know how much I would enjoy this thing in the other three seasons...but I do need it for winter as well.

Good snow tires on the car and a decent head on your shoulders and you will be fine.

I know how tough winters can be in Michigan. This car sits pretty low to the ground and there's gonna be some snowy days when you're probably not going to be able to drive it.

2. I havent' been able to find any information regarding crash test ratings...anything?

Don't know about crash tests, but call your insurance company. Insurance on an S2000 is usually pretty high. This may help you make a decision.

3. What is the degree of insulation for the roof top? Is it enough to last out Michigan winters?

Not really an issue. The heater is great. Well, probably just an average heater but it's heating a pretty small space.
