Well you came to the S2000 forum, full of S2000 lovers, so the obvious answer would be YES!!! But, being 17 you are definitely going to pay an arm and a leg in insurance. As a first car, I would be foolish to say I wouldn't have wanted an S2000, but at 17, well, I probably would have wrapped it around a pole or something.....Good luck.

You don't wanna hear it, but buy yourself somethin' that'll let you save your money. Reliable transportation that'll let you not think about spendin' another dime on it n' jus' use the hell oud'a it.
Get things established where, when you are finally pickin' an S2000 up, you're not maxed out financially, n' you've got some squish-room to take care of anythin' else that pops up. N' trust me . . somethin' else clamorin' for your hard-earned always pops up. But, you've already joined the site. Stay aboard so when you finally do make the transition, ain't gonna be no surprises. Welcome aboard damien. Java

Agreed with what has already been said.

You have to keep in mind, if you do use that $18000 to buy an S, you're going to have to buy full coverage insurance. 17 Year old, new driver, with a luxury sports car... I don't even wanna start to think about that.
I'm 23 with a clean record. With full coverage I pay $180 a month.

The Honda S2000 is a very unique little car, attractive to the eye but it has its limitations. It is not a winter car and to try and drive it through the snow can be a handfull even for the most experienced driver.
My pick would be the new Honda Civic, sporty, room for your buddies, and easily available for resale when required. This is just my opinion, so good luck. |

Civic is a great, reliable car. Get a little more experience before moving up to a fast car. Good advice from my fellow posters.

You didn't say if you're paying for your own insurance; if so, and you have everything covered, then have fun and drive safe. If it's your folks' insurance, not this car right now, give them a break. It'll be more fun when you can pay for that part yourself...

Call your insurance agent and find out what the cost difference is between an S2000 and a Civic. That will probably make the decision for you.

Better choice Damien, as its a better selection for the pending weather. If you bought an S it would be in storage now !

Dang, at 17 I was driving a rusted out, $150, 1969 baby blue VW bug with no heat in the dead of winter in Chicago. Great job damien on saving up that much cash. What do you do, deal drugs? (just kidding)

If I were 17 and had 18 grand to drop on a car, I'd get a 91 CRX and swap a boosted B20 in it! Bodywork, interior, suspension, engine +internals, rims, probably end up at about $10K with the baddest car around your school! More importantly, do the swap yourself and learn everything there is to know about your car. I've owned several cars in my lifetime and that one came closest to feeling like my current S2K!

Get a little Hatch back, Civic Si, Del Sol. Even a used 1995 - 1998 240 SX if you still want the rear wheel drive sporty feel. Its no "S", but it'll do. You can find those near mint for around $8-9k. Just my 2 cents....
