2004 Gear Grinding

Hiya - First post - I know this is somewhat of a discussed issue, but I'm opening a thread because I expect there will be some news since my 04 is currently at the dealer getting looked at for a gear grind problem between 1 and 2 when it's cold, and occasionally 2 to 3, despite the temperature.

I debated dropping it off for this b/c of the hassle, but since it's a lease vehicle I figured I'd better play it safe.

I've heard this being a problem for 00-03 and that there was a TSB on it. The dude at the dealer acknowledged that much. Reply if you're dealing with the same thing. I'll post up when I get the news.

hi, my car has that problem, but only from 1st -> 2nd gear, and it grinds doesn't matter if the car is cold or not. I did have it checked up by the dealers but they say is normal. But i am wondering if that will damage the car ?

Well I got zero out of the dealership in terms of a remedy but I did get peace of mind. Since i'm leasing this car I wanted to cover my butt in case at the end of or during the lease the tranny starts to go, I'll have in writing that I took it in for the problem and they did nothing.

You say your does it all the time - Mine stops after it's warmed up. If I were you I'd take it in just to be safe and get the invoice in your hand so you're protected in the event of a failure.

Good luck!

no problem - i don't think there are a lot of 2004 owners in here right now. but it doesn't surprise me that it's an 'issue' - one thing though - wanted to mention that the dealer was pretty cool about thinking the issue through. the mechanic mentioned synthtic gearbox oil. I asked him to verify if it was recommended by Honda or not, so he looked it up and got back to me with "it's not recommended at all..." - so for what it's worth, I'd just stick with what's in there and enjoy the ride.

I have a similar problem with my 04. It doesn't grind, but does occasionally pop out of gear when shifting from 1st to 2nd when cold. I pull the shifter down to go for second and when I let out the clutch the gearshift pops into neutral. No grind, but a little disturbing, especially if you're jumping out into traffic. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't duplicate the problem (of course). It probably only happens less than 5% of the time, but it is often enough to erode my confidence when shifting to 2nd.

I too have had this problem in the same timeframes that the shift into 2nd from 1st is a problem. It's definitely temperature related, meaning the outside temp, and in turn the temp of the fluid. Today it barely did it at all since it was such a nice day. On cold days I've made a habit of keeping my hand on the shifter when in 2nd gear at least while it's still warming up (10 minutes).

Mine grinds going from first to second when its cold. Sometimes, if I pull the shifter hard to the left as I shift, I avoid the grind. Dealer is to examine in 10 days. I know there was a TSB on this kind of thing in 6/01 for the 2000 model (TSB 00-055), but I haven't seen anything for MY04.

Not so much grinding

I don't so much grind (unless I skip a gear), but I have the issue of shifting from 1st to 2nd and the engine deciding to hesitate and act like it is starving and stalling until I shift out and back into gear. It doesn't matter if the engine is cold or warm nor the outside temp.

2nd gear grind

Dealer said Honda said its not a problem, and also assured me that it was now "documented," so that any consequences will be repaired under warranty even if they occur after the warranty expires. Some solace, but not much.

i realzie u really have to warm up the car then the griding problem will be gone. if u just doing local driving then it will always be der but if u do some higher rpm or higher speed drive then the problem will be gone...but just local drive is not enough ..i guess its problem of the temperture.

Mine does it as well, but only between 1st and 2nd. After the car warms up a bit, it goes away.

I have a 2000 S2000, and the only time it grinds is when I am pushing it, trying to quick shift, and cheat on the clutch a little.

On my 2002 it just seems you have to shift slower and let the rpms drop a little between gears right when you start out, before the car warms up. It's pretty annoying, If you push it right away it just snags between gears. It's mostly 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd.
It doesn't dissapoint once it's been running though...
