Hot Shift Knob

No, not for sale... My shift knob gets surprisingly hot when the car is parked out in the summer sun. I have a great sun shield and in fact the seat, stearing wheel, etc. are all reasonable, but the knob is HOT. It doesn't get direct sun so I'm wondering if it's somehow wicking heat up from the engine (well, the transmission)?
Anyway, my friend said that his buddy got one of those titanium short shift knobs and it helped with the heat. Anybody have direct experience with that or something like it? I'd like a shorter shift so I've been interested in the recessed shifter anyway, but any heat experience would be appreciated.

Thanks,
=Scooter

I produced some black walnut shift knobs. Never hot in summer or cold in winter.

I would insert a picture but I don't know how to.

The quickest way to cool it down I've found is put your car in first or third or fifth and turn on the AC.

Taters make great shift knobs, better than most fruits, vegetables or unobtainium metals. If the interior temperature gets really hot, just add a little butter and sour cream.

To insert pictures you need a Mugen Camera, with the Mugen memory card.

On a side note, what do you mean by walnut? Also getting an aluminum / titanium knob helps greatly.

+1. I have the voodoo aluminum knob and it is much cooler (pun intended) than the OEM leather/aluminum knob.

There is a leather knob cover (I think on ricks.com) that is designed to keep the knob cool on those hot summer days. You use it to cover the knob before you get out the car and when you return and take the cover off the knob is cool. I don't have one but I heard it works wonders. I think somoeone from this site has one.

The return of the "Tater Knob"...I love it! In California, we use the "Avocado Knob". They're only good for about 2 or 3 days then you make guacamole with them. Now if I only had a picture of one.......

That's why I like the new knob they came out with in '02. The leather around it stays a lot cooler and I can hold it there to shift. I haven't changed the knob for that exact reason.

Here is the site on Rick's. Check out the different colors.

The guy I bought the car from gave it to me and it works great. I drive with it on with no issues.

Here ya go, Doc. This was a tough one. Nobody here in Hooterville even knows what an avocado is. They all figure it's just a color for carpet and refrigerators. When I finally found one I had to use a carbide drill and tap. Must be some kinda stone inside?

I'm working on the biggest S2000 shift knob. 42# of solid billet. Takes a lot of knob polishing to get it right.

Oh, DJ, I do so miss avocados, we had an awesome tree in CA before we moved here, three harvests a year!
Hats etc. don't work, it's not the sun 'cause the sunshield doesn't help.
Spuds only work for a short time, and I still have butter stains on the seats...
And go, I agree, I also love the stock knob feel (except for the heat), which is why I am loath to change unless the new one is actually better.
Walnut might work, I knew that one from prev threads, but:

Bonus question, where is the heat coming from if no sun touches the knob (and it doesn't)? Physics question out of the blue...

No, really, I have tested this with all kinds of covers for the windshield and knob and it just doesn't matter - 110 degrees outside, get off work, it's hot. You all who don't actually get to experience our fair weather every summer probably can't experience this but there are a few here who get the heat thing!

Looks GREAT! I'll be over for guacamole in a couple of days. I'll bring the homemade salsa and chips.
I figured gomarlins would have a spud shifter, bein' from Idaho.

Scoot, I figger whut we’re layin’ our right pawz on (left, fer those’uv us drivin’ on the other side’a the street) is nothin’ budd’a hunk’a metal directly connected ta the churnin’n spinnin’ whut’z goin’ on down in’a tranny . . which, incidently, is directly connected ta the liddle engine whut could, which hazz’a habit’a runnin’ on the far side’a warm it’z’ownseff.
Add’t that that the hump surroundin’ said tranny is a great sink, only this sink don’t hold water; it holdz the heat (risez) from all’a whoopin’n hollerin’ whut goez on while we’re puttin’ li’l Stewie through it’z pacez.
(Oh . . . you probably won’t find this particular explanation’a why the shift-knob’z hot in any textbookz.)

Hee hee, not in that form anyway... However, it's only hot when I start out from sitting out on a hot day, so I guess it must be wicking heat up from the engine that's sucking up all the sunlight. It might do that when I'm having fun as well, but with all the whoopin and hollerin I don't notice it...
