Noob here

I am looking to get an 00-01 s2000 very soon, so i thought I'd do a little reasearch beforehand. I have always been an import lover, particular to Honda. Ive had a Del sol, and i now have a Crx, but I'm thinking its time for a step up. i am looking to find a white one, might settle for black, as long as it has red interior.
I have come here to read, learn, and to talk about cars. All the other forums i am on are all a bunch of high school kids running their mouths. Even though I am only 19, i have a very good job, and no support from my parents. So please do not flame me cause of my age.

the S2000 is an AMAZING car. I just bought one last wednesday. I have owned 1) 91 Miata 2) 96 Celica GT Convertible 3) 03 Mazda Protege5.... and this car SMOKES the ALL without having to engage the hot cam!!! When driving, it is rare to keep an engine ABOVE 7000 RPM and it takes some getting used to, but you get the same performance out of a 1997cc engine as you would the 3.5L VQ powered 350Z. I think the secret is weight. This car feels like it weighs nothing. The funest thing I have found so far is drifting around a corner at around 50 miles per hour, IN COMPLETE CONTROL!!! And best of all, the engine doesnt beat you up in track (a la Corvette). Get one....they are a steal if you can get one for under 19,000 with low miles. Consult consumer reports, as I think they reported some engine problems for the '01. Best bang for your buck. Nothing like smoking a Porsche that costs twice as much!

I would suggest going 02 if you are buying used. Glass rear window, slightly better sound system, improved oil jet bolts (in second half of year). The changes to 03 weren't as significant. At this point, most 00 and 01s are going to have a bunch of miles and possibly more than one owner, I'd stay away.

In mid MY2002, the banjo bolts that feed oil to the underside of each cylinder were changed from a 2 hole to a 4 hole design. Apparently, there were some failures of cars in the European market from MY00 and MY01. Honda actually had a recall and retrofitted all the MY00 and 01 cars in Europe with the 4 hole bolts but had no such recall in the US.

From what I recall, Honda's stand on this was that the failures were from continuous operation at high RPMs (for example cruising at 130 on the Autobahn for an hour straight) so there was no need to retrofit US cars. Nevertheless, the switched to the 4 hole bolts in 02 for USDM anyway.

I think the jury is still out on whether they make a difference. Search www.s2ki.com forums for "oil jet bolts" and you will find dozens of threads and tons of opinions.

I'm SC'd and have the bolts for my 01... sitting on my work bench LOL. Haven't had time to put them in yet

halo, are they expensive to buy and/or are they hard to put in? I have limited knowledge of engines and a simple hardware store tool kit.

They cost 40 bucks for a set. www.hardtopguy.com

They require more than just a few tools. You have to drop the oilpan, reinstalling it requires gasket material. Getting at the bolt under the #1 cylinder appears to be a bitch because the oil pump is in the way. Some people have used a flexible driver tool to get at it. Apparently, some engines in Europe failed after the bolt was incorrectly installed in the #1 spot. (Guess even Honda mechanics need to practice on someone's car )

Anyway, if you haven't done stuff like change your own oil, tranny fluid, brake pads etc I wouldn't try this.
