Re: Wheel Size of s2000
Hi,
17 is better.... 18 is nicer !!! If you can find light 18, I suggest you to take 18 but if you are looking for performance, 17 is better ! Before 2004, 16 was the standard on S2000 ! HTH, Quote:

i dunno why but i have to say i disagree 18" are both better looking and handleing... with 18" rims u will be using a lower profile tire which gives a better handling ... this is just my personal experiecne.. .

Some conflicting info here ...
So how about 16" wheels, do 17s or 18s give better performance? And if u put low prof tires on 16s -- will it put the car too low or do you have up increase wheel size first? Surely there's more ppl out there with experience in this area that can weigh in ... |

maybe i need to clearify abit more, it should be incrasing the rim size first then use a lower prof tire, which make the overall size similar to the 17" originals, but only if u r rims is equal to the 17" weight or lighter ... if is heavier then is not going to help much ...

People always use the "well if you get a light 18 inch wheel it won't affect handling so much" Problem with this argument is that the weight of a wheel-tire combination is 2/3 tire and 1/3 wheel on average. The stock wheels on the S2000 weight anywhere from 14-17 lb (depending on front/rear AP1/AP2). Good luck finding an 18" wheel that is less than that.
Obviously, as you go larger on the wheel diameter, you will also go wider on the tire. But, the slight decrease in sidewall size as you go lower profile will not offset the additional weight of the wider tire. The other problem is that all this additional weight is at the outermost part of the rotating object so it adds even more rotational intertia = slower acceleration, worsened handling. There is also a huge misconception about contact patch. The size of the contact patch of a tire has little to do with the size of the tire. It is largely a function of the pressure in the tire and the weight of the car. A 2800lb car with nearly 50/50 weight distribution like the S has 700lb on each tire. That means the contact patch (square inches) = 700lb / tire pressure (psi). Lower profile tires actually run HIGHER pressure so the contact patch, if anything, is smaller. It is true, however, that the SHAPE of the contact patch changes as the tire gets wider. The take home message is this: An S2000 running 18" or larger wheels, 35 or lower profile tires, slammed to the ground showing off those cross drilled rotors with painted calipers has not been modified for increased performance. These changes are for show. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you don't try to blow smoke up someone's ass by saying these changes give INCREASED performance. |

Even if you can find an 18" wheel that is lighter than the stock 16 (or 17), I assume you are going WIDER not just taller. So rather than a 225 in the back, you'll be running 245 or 255. The tire will be much heavier (10lb or more) than the stock tire. Handling will, in general, be worse with more rotating mass.
