An Apexi VAFC, for example, will let you adjust the VTEC engagement point. However, simply switching to the high rpm cam at a lower RPM doesn't 'make more power earlier' That cam's profile is designed for the flow the head sees at 6,000 rpm and above. Otherwise, why not just run on the high RPM cam all the time?

Some people have claimed modest gains (like PEAK 10-12whp) with an intake/exhaust and the minimal tuning to A/F ratio you can do with a VAFC.

This isn't pointed at your post, but I'm surprised by the number of people that thing VTEC is some sort of magical gizmo that suddenly transforms the engine into a turbine from an F16. It's just changing the profile of the cam lobes so the valves have enough time to get air in and out of the combustion chamber at higher rpm. That same profile would be detrimental to performance at lower rpm. Again, not pointed at your post, just came to mind.

yeah i already ordered the aem v2 intake for my '02........ i am hoping that will give that little bit of low end torque i think it needs........ cause it is such a beast after 6k rpm........ it is awesome

i dunno if i am wrong, but as far as i know, changing the intake will gain HP (limited) but not torque. anyone else think so ?

Yes that is correct. In order to get more low end torque you're going to need a turbo or a roots type blower (still not available AFAIK).

or increased displacement.

Although not techincally low end engine torque, some people have changed their final drive ratio. This in effect gives better acceleration at the expense of lower top speed in each gear.

I've always pondered the miracle that final drive is supposed to achieve. To me, it seems like it would help you in first gear only. After that, what's the difference between having a higher final drive or just downshifting? As an example, if I want the absolute best rolling start with my stock final drive, I need to be at 20mph in 1st, 40mph in 2nd or 60mph in 3rd (6,000 rpm in each case).

Now, if I go to a higher final drive, my optimum RPM will still be 6,000 it's just that this rpm will be at slightly lower speeds in each gear. Other than 1st gear, how does this make me faster?
