S2000 or Sti?

Hey guys, new to the forum and I need help. I need a new car soon and I wan't A) an Sti or B) an S2000. What are the perks of the S2000? Impress me guys! I am going to drive one tomorrow and then an Sti on sunday and make up my mind. Is it bad that the S2k redlines at 8k rpm? How long do the engines run? Thanks guys!

Rob,
I just got my 02 s2k about 3 weeks ago.. I was considering an STI also, but decided to get the s2k based on price.. I got a used one at what I considered a great price ($20k for an 02 with 19k miles).. so it saved me about 13k if I had to buy a new one (either s2k or STI).. but back ato the subject.. I love the car and am not regretting it one bit.. the only draw back is that it is only a 2 seater and I have two kids, so it may not be the most practical, but once you get going with the top down, all that goes out the window.. this is my escape.. I never drove the STI, but I think it really comes down to if you want practicality and all round use or if you just want a car that feels great and makes you feel great....

Hey Rob;
Ya buys yer ticket; ya takes yer chances. Take your drives; make your selection.
All the jaw-flappin' that we do here is 2nd hand info to you. Our personal preferences are just that: our personal preferences. While they're somethin' for you to consider, they're no substitute for doin' your homework n' droppin' your rump into the driver's seat to throw each car around for a bit.
(N' it's not gonna make us your favorite people if you pick, solely on our say-so, what you later determine to be the wrong car )
Good luck, n' like the old knight said: "Choose wisely".

I think it boils down to this: Do you want a roadster or an econobox?

No matter how much more practical, or faster the STi might be, no amount of Vishnu ECUs, FMICs, MBCs, uppipes, downpipes, halfpipes, crackpipes, BOVs or catbacks will allow you to drop the top on a sunny day and give you the feeling of driving a roadster. If you want to use the car to carry bikes, or more than a single passenger then I say go with the STi (actually, I'd prefer the Evo but that's a whole other can of worms).

The engine may rev to 8K (or 8800 for the AP1) but it is, after all, a Honda. Change the oil regularly, don't bounce off the rev limiter too much, and it is bulletproof. You must rev it, and keep the revs up, if you want it to perform as intended.

Good luck!

Test drive both cars. I did and chose the S2K.

The STi had everything I wanted. Great handling, lots of traction, decent gas mileage, reliability, and of course a rediculous amount of power.

However, once I drove the S2K (after testing an STi) the decision was clear. The S2K is about as pure of a sports car as you can get. Only the Elise is more pure. It is lighter, far more nimble, and frankly, the fact that it takes a restrained right foot and quick wrists makes is the more enjoyable and rewarding car to drive. It is a TRUE driver's car.

After the test drives, the STi was reduced to a high powered sled in my opinion. Everything about is too easy, you don't have to work for anything. The traction is always there, persistent understeer saves your ass, the turbo makes fantastic but dare I say "fake" power. It just lacks the driver involvement that is so well built into the S2K. Can you tell I love my car?

It's true that it takes a great driver to reach 95% of a car's ability and to hold it there for a sustained period of time, especially in cars with limits this high. After flinging both of these wonderful machines around a track you may step out of the STi and wonder to yourself..."was that me or the car?" but when you step out of the S2K, all doubt will be removed.

Not to be an ass, but my standard reply to this question for the past four years whether it be an STi or ANY other car is: If you have to ask, buy the other car.

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.
