Best replacement tires?
What do you guy's think about the Goodyear Eagle GS-D3 tires? Tirerack seems to rank them pretty damn highly in all categories, and much higher than my stock Potenza S-02's in tread wear. Plus they are cheaper. Anyone have any experience with these beasts? Also, what is the best size tires to put on my stock 16 inch 2002 wheels? I've read that Bridgestone's width ratings are slightly different than most other manufacturers.

Aay Slim! Howyadoon?
I don't have anything as far as which tire'd be best, but you mentioned TireRack n' I think that's a good way to go. Alotta knowledge available through those folks. I'm gonna say somethin' that might need sayin', but better safe than sorry. Just don't put much stock in the customer evals. They're all over the map when talkin' about the same tire/car combo. About the only thing you can trust for a tire evaluation is: 1) Somebody who's got some experience doin' the testin'/evaluations and 2) Those tests and evals bein' done by that one individual, or, at least a small group of individuals that do this kinda thing regularly. If you've got different tires tested by different individuals it's apples n' oranges. N' then top it off with it bein' like your choice of movie critics: You've gotta find someone who has the same kinda demands on the tire/car combination as you do. Damn! I'm gettin' a lotta use outa this: Like the old knight said . . . Good luck. |

Haven't tried the Good Years but you are correct that the sizing for the stock 16s are 20mm wider than what the sidewall says.
In other words, those 225s S02s on the back need to be replaced with 245 wide tires for a direct replacement. That is unless you get OEM S02s that actually have a different designation. I tried to save some cash and went with Yokos. Jim at tirerack tried to talk me out of them and recommended the Kumho Ecsta's as being sticker. As practical as I am, I just couldn't see myself driving on something with the words Kum, Ho and Ecsta on it. Well, the Yokos just plain suck, compared to the S02s or even S03s they just don't grip nearly as well. My recommendation, therefore, is to email jim@tirerack.com and ask for some recommendations for your fitment. I'd stay away from the Yokohamas. |

I've read good stuff about the Kumhos. For the price...they give very good B+ performance. Which Yokahamas did you have? I am in love with the S-02s, but I don't anticipate them lasting very long.

Hi there.
New member, Long term owner signing in. Tyres... My experience. The Stock Bridgestone S02 Tyres are the best I have used in dry conditions. I've not used any other tyre that comes close to the amount of grip in the dry. In the wet however, which there's quite a lot of over here in the UK, they a close to being dangerous. There is very little wet weather grip at all. As a direct result of this I know of a number of people that have had bad spins in the wet. Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres are MUCH better in the wet, but no where near as good in the dry. Similar for Toyo Proxies T1-S but they do wear faster. I'm now using the newly released Toyo Proxies T1-R and so far it "feels" like the dry weather grip has been greatly improved. Wet has always been good. In short you buy what works for your climate. If I was living in Nevada I wouldn't have a problem with the Bridgestone's. But in the UK I need something that will disperse the water as well as giving a good dry grip. I think the new T1-R does just that. - Chris PS... As mentioned. I am no expert, this is just my opinion. |

Thanx fletch, you answered a whole buncha questions I'd've hadda post down the line. When UK says somethin' about tires in the rain I tend to pay attention.
With your "time at the helm" I imagine you'll be chimin' in from time to time. 'Save us newbies a whole buncha travel in the wrong direction with real-world experience. I'm for that. Welcome aboard. |

I've heard/read good things about Kumhos.. Wet and dry performance aree supposedly excellent.. and the price seems to be pretty decent too.. that is always a plus..
let me know what you find and how they work.. I have the OEM s02 on and they seem great. I don't push the car in the rain(I'm on the cautious side when bad weather hits), so I haven't felt a great deal of difference. Since I will be putting about 15k a year, tires are pretty important.. thanks jal |

I know a number of people in the UK are running the Goodyear Eagle GSD3. They are a very good tyre in the wet.
When using anything but the s2000 model Potenza S02s on stock rims, you should run 245/45/16 on the rear and 205/55/16 in the front. |
