Bike Rack Experience?
I haven't been able to fit my bicycle in the trunk without considerable application of my Sawzall, which I'm not anxious to do. Has anybody been impressed with how a particular bicycle rack worked on the S2?
Thanx. |

There is a hitch you can buy that mounts like any other hitch. From that point, you can probably purchase a bike rack adapter for the hitch. The search feature is down at s2ki or I would post a link. I had debated getting one so I could pull a small trailer to events.

I've thought long and hard about this too since I bought the S. I don't want anything to touch the paint on this car so any kind of rack with straps is out (not to mention I don't trust those types of racks). A receiver hitch, I believe, would need a small hole cut in the rear valence at the bottom of the bumper or it would be below the bumper. Either way I think it would look like crap and completely ruin the lines of the car.
Back in the day, I remember someone marketed a rack that mounted to the screws holding the rear license plate on specifically for convertibles. Seemed like a reasonable idea although I wonder if those screws have enough strength to hold a rack and a bike. What I liked about this system is when you removed the rack, the part attached to the license plate stayed on but was VERY stealthy. -edit: Found the rack I was thinking of. Pretty cheap too. Looks like it still needs one strap to hold it to the car and there is some sort of reinforcement plate behind the license plate to stiffen things up a bit. Tempting at that price. http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/unliplmobica.html |

Thanx muchly guys. I definitely had no intentions of trustin' anything on my paint, so one of those trunk contraptions was never an option. N' while the tow hitch does seem like a useful item at times it's addin' a hunka iron at the cars extremities n' that isn't helpin' anything except my ability to put on a tow-hitch bike rack.
That license plate unit seems like a good solution, but I'm currently havin' the same feelin's about it as I was about fletchs carbonfibre strut tower bar. I've gotta do some research on this, but on the first read it seems like the best, n' least detractin', deal. I had visions of cobblin' somethin' that'd attach inside the trunk. Ya may have saved me that. As always, thanx guys. Much appreciated. |

I have heard reports of people taking the wheels off their bikes and fitting it in the passenger seat.

Matt;
Maybe if I wore really big floppy shoes, hadda round red nose, n' answered to the name a' Bozo. (N' no. I don't) Outside of one of those 6" circus bicycles I can't see a real frame fittin' into that space, well, at least not without the risk of somethin' pointy pokin' a hole in my leather. Besides, I ain't against work, but to pull the rear wheel off every time? I think I'll opt for some kinda rack, but thanks Matt. |

Yeah it isn't something that I would be willing to try either. Similarly I don't think I'll let my rottweiler sit in the car with me either.

Ya know . . there's jus' too much similarity goin' on on this site. Like minded individuals I guess. But please tell me that your Rotties name isn't Roo n' that he doesn't list as a favorite pastime jumpin' on a car roof for a better vantage point. Thankfully he's shown no interest in gettin' on the S2. Probably not enough height for 'im.
Thanx for the input Matt. Much appreciated. |

Still waiting for the S2ki search feature to come back up. I'm sure with over 5000 members, someone has tried that license plate mounted rack and could give a yay or nay on it.

I have seen one of these, although never a bike on top of it:
http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/hons2truncar.html Personally I think they look ugly, and I wouldn't have it on for longer than I needed to. The main problem with most bike racks is that they attach to a towball. |

Someone would have to put a gun to my head before I put one of those things on the S.
You don't need a towball, per se, just a receiver hitch. On some cars, (a buddy's Mustang for example), they are able to bolt the receiver so it is hidden quite well (about 4" behind the bumper). Less obvious than a chrome ball but still visible if you were driving behind the car. |

I guess it's personal opinion time on bike racks.
As long as the unit: 1) Cannot itself, and will not allow the carried bike to damage my S2, 2) Is easily removeable, and, 3) Carries my bike securely, I could care less what it looks like. But, while it appears that there are a number of bike racks out there, the average S2 owner is not at all understanding of a bike rack that even has the possibility of ANY unsavory effects on said S2. Like I told the valet parking attendant that was openly droolin' n' reachin' for the unoffered keys to my S2:" I don't let my wife drive it. What could possibly make you think that I'd let YOU drive it?" They DO seem to garner a certain amount of protectiveness from us, don't they? |
