Rising temperature in the cocpit
Owner of a '00 s2000,and facing a problem with incoming heat from the handbrake and gear levers.I'm thinking to remove the plastic cover and insulate it from below with somekind od fireproof fibre.Any other solution?
P.S -I use 10-60 Shell racing motor oil is it a good selection? |

Well, let me start this off with the usual disclaimer that "all that follows is personal opinion" and we'll go from there.
I believe the fire retardant fibre would work, but only for a short period of time before the heat found it's way through and you'd be right back where you started, with simply a longer time before the heat became a bother. I don't know how easily it could be done, or if it could be done at all, but I believe a better way to go would be a relatively pliant impenetrable membrane (sheet teflon or even a chunk of old flight suit nomex) that you could cut to fit as tightly as possible around the shifter and emergency brake. I think that you'd get better protection from the heat with that as opposed to just a maze of fibre that the heat's gonna find its way through quickly anyway. If all else fails there's always welders gloves. Who knows? You might start the latest fashion. So much for my opinion. Hope it's of some help. Be well. |

I have a 2005 S2000, which I have the same problem. The handbrake openning is very hot, it's very hot in summer when I move my hand over it. I guess this would be kind nice in winter.

I was just out sitting in a line, engine idling, for about 20 minutes waiting to get inspected. The temperature is 95 degrees F and I probably don't have to tell you that the asphalt lot that I was sitting in was one huge heat sink. What I'm getting at is that while I sat there I thought about your post and problem with the heat, so, naturally I put my hand over the shifter and handbrake area: nada. Zipp. There was no heat difference to speak of. I'm running an '04. I wouldn't be surprised that the problem you're having hasn't already been addressed at Honda in the form of a "shield" of some sort, that's incorporated in the later cars (and here's the good part) and because of the similarity in the years, could probably be installed on yours. I'd check with the experts: Honda . . or if you really wanna get technical, halo. Whichever comes first. Hope it's a help. |

unfortunately, this is a common problem. I saw somewhere that someone had insulated the area around the tunnel and reduced the heat considerably. I'll try to find that link. No reason why you shouldn't be able to use the same insulation they use under the hood to block some of that heat. (BTW, this a common problem with all S2K's)

Man, bringin' ol' threads back ta life is gettin' ta be a popular pastime.
'Thing about this is that if there isn't an air-tight barrier sealin' the handbrake n' all other forms of penetrations of the tunnel, heat's gonna rise through 'em. Insulation'll maybe slow it down, but it's still gonna get through. What you got is similar to water in a washtub. Gravity pulls the water down n' if there's any holes in the washtub, the water gets through 'em. The tunnels basically an upside-down washtub whut's catchin' hot air that rises into it from under the car. If there's any holes in the tunnel, the hot air rises through 'em. Unless you can, one way r' another, seal off those leaks, the hot air's gonna be joinin' you in the cockpit. (Aaay. It ain't 'zackly Mr. Wizard, but I hope it helps) Be well. Java Hmmm-m-m-m . . . maybe a cosmetically appealin' insulated, carbon-fibre vent stack with a chrome flapper lid on it might be a big seller? 'Might even have a port to mount your mornin' espresso cup n' keep it hot)

The heat comes through on mine as well, but I am not concerned about it.
About the oil question, I would stick with 10W30.

Just want to add another ? to this thread since I came up blank on the search. How about the heat coming from the firewall? My feet will get sweaty even on a mild day. I've even tried to vent fresh air to the feet but with minimal effect. That bothers me even more than the transmission heat. Any chance there might be a hole or uninsulated part that needs attention. TIA

I don't have a problem with heat coming from the firewall. I usually wear sandles on long drives and when it's warm outside, I have the vents set to hit my feet until it gets really hot and I need AC from to the body and the feet.

I get handbrake heat in my '01. Since I have 102k miles, I figured that if it was a problem, something definitely would have happened by now

It's possible but, I highly doubt it. The S had 12 miles and all the plastic wrapping that came from the factory

Found a simple way to fix my cabin heat problem today - hit the recirculate button
. It's still weird because I always have the dial all the way in the cool zone in the vent setting and it only gets hot air under the dash area after a good hour drive. Should I be worried that there's a valve somewhere that is stuck? Or just learn to live with looking at that ugly amber light on the recirculate button
