Power steering fluid works great to have in the car in case you crash with fire. Way better than a fire extinguisher.

I've never had to replace a clutch slave cylinder or a clutch master cylinder on any of my cars, including a 194,000 mile Toyota Tercel. (In fact, I never did any clutch maintenance of any kind on the Tercel.)
It occurs to me to ask (Honda loyalists, don't hate me!): Does Honda make master and slave cylinders that don't last very long? Just wondering. |

now it has the ORIGINAL brake pads.. but his had the same issue as mine. he had issues shifting and we looked at the fluid (he had never thought to check it) and it was as low as it could be. we filled it up and his shifting problems went away. he never noticed it leak again and the fluid hasnt dropped. but i've got a friend that works on hondas and he does a lot of slave cylinders on accords and civics... dunno why

Actually it is a good lube for the water pump if it gets noisy.
In theory, the brake and clutch fluid should be changed out every couple of years. Especially if you keep adding to it. I did lose my brakes pulling a trailer down a winding mountain road at Zion Natl. Park due to rust pitting of the slaves.

unlike the magical corrosive brake fluid... he replaces them due to absolute failure. not a drop after 40,000 mi, but a complete "clutch-2-floor" situation.

Hey Marrk i sure will.
But 2 more days has passed and nothings wrong. Im going to go with Turbosix on this. Its not a problem to me until it gets very leaky. I mean im not ruining anything else really other than the clutch and thats ONLY when the fluid goes below MIN. And jagg, to answer to your comment, i honestly cant afford it right now. Im 18 and a college student with a part time job. I can barely pay for my insurance but since i love my car like no tomorow, i find ways around it

You guys are FUNNY! All kidding aside, brake fluid is very mild but still not a good idea to expose paint to it unnecessarily. Anti-freeze will strip paint pretty good though, as I can personally attest.
Back to the Slave/Master cylinder problem: If it leaks and there is a rebuild kit available it is a very inexpensive solution to the problem. Just need to make sure the bore isn't scored and is still perfectly smooth. If it has scratches in it you'll need to replace the entire mechanism -- still not too difficult a job for any DIY'er to accomplish.
