wondering?

I hate just continuously asking questions but i have a 3 month warrenty so i need to make sure everything is good in that time. my shifts from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 kinda feel like i am grinding but not really. my first car (honda prelude) shifted different, and kinda just slid into gear so maybe its just because im not used to it clinking in, im wondering if this is normal to have this clinking kinda noise when i shift into those gears, and sometimes i dont

Try having the tranny fluid changed and see if that helps.

Here is a good DIY on changing the MTF http://forums.s2kca.com/showthread.php?t=10449.

I would also say that the 1st to 2nd shift is kind of an art in this car. You can't rush it. You have to sloooow down when you do it even though the RPM's seem to race up rather quickly. It is a little hard to explain but take your time with it or it will grind. The syncro's are working really hard in 2nd and rushing it only makes it worse.

Change the fluid and for that matter all the fluids if you just bought the car and take a little time to figure out what the car likes. This is not a Civic.

Good luck and keep posting questions...isn't that what a forum is for???

Yes, I thought my trans was off or the syncros where broken but in reality it is just driver error.
I have a 400HP MSP with a short shifter and it never grinds no matter how fast you shift but I took that trans apart and rebuilt it by hand and added Redline synthetic to it.
This transmission is typical of RWD cars in the fact that it has a more positive, metallic feel to it. It takes more skill and familiarity with the car in regard to hand/foot coordination to pull off fast shifts than it does with an otherwise less precise car. FWD cars (even good ones) seem to have more "stupid" room in terms of shifting ease.
The old Corvettes, Camaros and other hot rods I have driven in the past were closer to my S2000 at least when it comes to the feel of the transmission. They had higher effort and that "click, click" to every upshift or downshift. Whereas my FWD cars just slip through the gears with low effort and a bit of a "snick" sound/feel.

Now that I have had enough seat time with my S2000 I hardly ever miss a shift but it can still happen if I don't time it properly.

Jeez Y, no smart ass comments? You sound like Java when he's serious. Actually, I don't have anything smart ass to say either.
I did grind 1st to 2nd yesterday trying to merge onto the freeway from the shoulder in rush hour traffic yesterday (and I thought I was over doing that). About a minute later, my CEL came on. No relation, I believe. Got to get the code pulled.
OK, I'm done.

My car only has 10k miles on it and although it doesn't grind, it does feel kind of notchy until the transmission gets warmed up.

If it pops out of gear, the TSB hasn't been applied. That should be covered under a recall.

I just had my transmission rebuilt under warranty at 7700 miles. They fixed the pop out of 4th problem and I thought for a while it was shifting more smoothly. But no, it's pretty much the same as before even with new third and fourth gears and syncros. Shift very fast, OK; shift very slow, OK. In between it's still a little touchy.

First off, heed gomarlins3 and make sure you have the right gear oil Honda MT. Shift with 2 distinct moves. Gear to neutral, pause 1/2 second, next gear. Don't force it, it practically shifts itself. I've not had it jump out of any gear nor have I heard it from any other owner.

That is/was a known problem. Some '05/'06 cars had the problem. I had my transmission rebuilt by Honda and they replaced the 1st-Reverse gear set, the synchros, a shift fork and a bunch of seals under the TSB.

Hadn't heard about that. Evidently limited to a certain production window. My 2002 shifts like a dream.

3rd gear pop out

Who was driving when this 3rd gear popped out? Was it an experienced manual driver or what?

The OP didn't say his car popped out of 3rd gear. He just said he heard that some S2000s had this issue. As it turns out, there is a TSB relating to that.

How do you like your Yaris?

I agree with this, my 07 is the same way. Also, the 1st to 2nd shift will grind if the clutch is not quite depressed enough. Something that can happen when you are trying to shift fast. Experience with the car has a lot to do with it.

I was actually driving it today and noticed that if i shift into 3 a little more right of the notch it does not occur...could this mean that there is nothing wrong and it was just me having to get used to it?
