6th Gear Acceleration Problem

Just bought a second s2000 a week ago, 1999 with 55000 miles on the clock.

Was driving last night in 6th geat, doing about 50mph, when I floored it the revs increased quite quickly without much acceleration then after a few seconds the car started accelerationg. It seemed almost as thought it changed itself into a lower gear for a few seconds before changing back to 6th. I hope you understand what I am saying.

Is this a feature of s2000?
Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Thanks

Sounds like a slipping clutch. Easiest way to determine is to start the car, make sure the car cannot move (handbrake, chock the wheels, park against a tree, etc). Put it into 1st gear and release the clutch slowly. If you can release the clutch without the engine dying, you have a $700 problem (new clutch). If it dies, there may be oil on the clutch plate from a bad rear crank seal in which case you have a $700 problem (new rear seal). I'm just kidding about the replacement costs, but revs increasing without corresponding acceleration is a definite sign of clutch problems. Does the car accelerate normally in 1 through 5th gear?

Slipping clutch would be my guess as well.

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.

Thanks for the info kgf3076. The car does appear to accelerate properly from 1st through to 5th. In 6th it only happens once in a while. I'll test the clutch out and see

Problem seems to be getting worst. It must be a slipping clutch. How annoying!

Odd that it's doing it in 6th though. I vote clutch too, but it should be most noticeable in 1st, shouldn't it?

It seems to be doing it in all gears now. I guess this is what is called aa "slipping clutch".

The most annoying thing is it was fine when i test drove the car, the day after i bought the car this started happening. How unlucky can a man be?!

Clutches slip easier in higher gears at slower speeds. That is the best way to tell, go 40 or miles per hour in 5th or sixth and it will slip before it will in 1-3. I think torque has something to do with it in the higher gears.

I had the same thing happen to me when I got my 2000 S2000 I only had it for three days and already I had to put $1200.00 for a new clutch
