whats up everyone, i have a quick question regarding my 2000 S. Any help would be appreciated. Ok, I have 107,000 miles(i know thats a lot, but who can resist driving this machine?), and it seem to have started making a rattling noise during start up in the mornings. Sounds like something is rolling around or has dropped some change. The sound seems to come from the front left of the engine. It is not rev sensitive, last on 3-5 seconds and it goes away when warmed up. I always keep the oil topped of too. Is it the timing chain or possibly heat shield rattle? What exactly is heat shield rattle?

Heat shield rattle is when the bolts on the heat shield next to the engine aren't tight enough and the shield rattles against the block. Not even a problem really, just means the bolts need to be tightened.
However, that likely may not be the problem. Do you have a chain tensioner to make sure the timing chain is snug? When was the last time you had your car serviced at Honda?

thanks Scott, the last time i had it serviced at honda was about a month ago when i got the oil changed. i actually bought it from them used with 101,000 miles. As far as the tensioner, i'm assuming it has one, i will definitely get it checked out, i just dont know how much trouble they would have to go through just for a simple check. Anyhow, i appreciate u taking the time to reply, have a nice evening!

I believe I know the noise you are referring to on start-up. Although I have only had it happen to me 3 times all year (so not easily reproduced). To me it sounded like the noise you get from the starter motor when you try to start a car that is already running/holding down start button too long.
I know that it is not me holding the button too long (and probably not you either), just that the sound reminded me of the starter motor. Perhaps the problem is related to the starter motor? |

JRay8, is this the noise?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=_nSoTfw3rrk If so, I hear that every so often as well. I live in CA so temperatures in the morning are slowly starting to warm up... Nonetheless, it does happen to me on occasion. Not this morning though! I had begun to think that parking it nose-first on my up-slope driveway (every fluid would flow towards the rear of the car) might have been causing it. In hindsight, though, it had been making that noise in the garage as well... |

I'm having the same problem but it does not happen to me in a regular basis. I then had the car tuned up and replaced the spark plugs with pulstar plug
I dunno whats the reason behind but the sound vanished. I'm not hearing it already. I didn't bother asking the mechanic though since the problem is solved anyway. |

I have the same problem and when I took it to the dealership and some autopartswarehouse shop they said the rattling noise when starting the car, is from air being in the engine. They suggested that before stepping on the brake and starting the car on a cold day, to ACC start. So push the button, you'll hear air come out and then step on the brake and start. It helped for me. as for the rattling I hear the same thing. And I have not been able to figure it out. Well good luck on finding a solution.
