Question transmission question! help please!

Hello everyone. I just bought an 2001 s2k. When I test drove it, it was fine. Now that I have the car, I notice that when I get into a gear for example 5th gear. After getting into gear I would let go of the gas and then I hear like a grinding sound. I get worried and just shift the gear. I don't know if this is normal or not. Any help would be great. Thank you

Welcome aboard Qs. 'Afraid that I can't offer much other than what I'd do in a similar situation.
The site serves a whole bunch'a purposes n' does most of 'em well, but the diagnosin' of problems isn't exactly where it shines. Noises n' such defy most of us in translation into words, n' that gets further complicated n' muddied by the reader translatin' it into somethin' that makes sense at his/her end.
If it's somethin' that sounds like it could be trouble n' possibly be doin' damage, I'd get it to a reputable mechanic r' maybe even mother Honda to ease any apprehension.
Especially in a case such as yours, where you've jus' picked your new ride up, mention it n' ask 'em to eyeball everythin' n' round up the usual suspects while they're checkin' out that grindin' sound. There's alodda relief to be had by gettin' the blessin' of a good mech.
'Probably not what you wanted to hear, but it's the best I got.
Be well n' good luck.

Well I think we would all agree its not normal. If you have grinding going into gear I would suspect the clutch first and then the transmission syncros. Certainly time to get "professional" help.

Go back and read my post of a couple months ago titled "exhaust rattle?" See if this tells you anything. You use the term "grinding" the noise I had was more of a vibration or rattle then a grinding sound. If it is in fact grinding then I would have to think the transmission itself is bad. The letting off the gas however makes me wonder if you are experiencing the same thing I did. If it ONLY happens when you let off the gas and are engine braking and slowing without applying the brakes then I would suspect the clutch. Replacing the clutch seems to have completely cured my problem but I would never have characterized the sound as grinding. John H

I get some grind when going into 5th when driving harder and I know it's my synchros, but I haven't heard of it making noise other than for the decel buzz that some cars have. I only get that once in a while in either 2nd or 4th gear. Doesn't happen often. Maybe this is what he is experiencing?

I agree, I think that maybe what he was hearing. My 2001 does have a bit of clutch buzz on decel in 3-5 gear. Not hurting anything, just a bit annoying. Can be fixed by replacing the clutch.
