Clutch setups
Hello, I am using a S2000 gearbox on the back of a merc V8 but I dont know what the best clutch to use is? The engine has the best part of 400BHP therefore it needs to have a high rating, but I dont want to spend the earth. Any suggestions would be great thanks.
Also, I am looking for a flywheel, starter, clutch cylinder and gear selecter setup if anyone on here is from the uk and has anything kicking about. Cheers Danny |

I have to ask.... why use a tranny originally usd for a low-torque four-cylinder behind a 400HP V8? A Borg Warner unit sounds like a much better alternative.

good question
Its the only thing that will fit in the tunnel of my kitcar, it is very narrow. The honda box was also cheap and quite availible.

The kitcar is a 1981 corvette replica, but I have no plans to try and make it look like a corvette. I am just gonna build it and at the end it will be my own supercar, thats the plan anyway.

Ok, it might be the only tranny that fits. And maybe it is available and cheap. This does not mean you should use it behind a 400HP V8. Sorry, but I really think you're going to spend money, time and effort all for nothing.

The V8 is 320BHP and I mite leave it at that. Do you hear of these gearboxes giving up, from what I have read ppl put 400f/lb of torque through them. If the clutch is going to be an issue I will make my own flywheel and put something bigger on. But, on the other hand if the clutch slips it mite save the gearbox.
bjurasz have you got any experience of these gearboxes failing or are you just going off common sense? |

Dannny, you are correct, I'm going off common sense and not off any experience. As weight conscious as Honda is with this car (though not nearly so as Lotus!) I would not expect the tranny to be any more beefy than is required.

Looks like it may end up in tears then. I might make a 5 speed fit also ready to slot in if need be. Like I said before I cant fit anything else, but I think the gearbox will be ok with 320BHP and 300f/lb of torque. Time will tell I guess.
