Yes, it will happen, but I am not on a stock suspension any longer so mine may not be the best judgement to go on.

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.

Metallic "pops" always send me to check that everything is tightened to where it's supposed to be. The most obvious would be the wheel lugs n' then, check the suspension n' if that checks out, move right up the power delivery chain.
Other than expansion n' contraction of hot metal, pops usually mean that there's some slop someplace where there ain't supposed to be any.
Be well n' good huntin'.

my front right does that on a brand new coil over. I check everything and everything is tied. Usually that's associate with the mounting pillow and its pushing.. Anyway, I might just have to replace that suspension just to see if that is the case...

I know there is a service bulletin for popping and creaking noises in the rear on the 00-02 models. What model is yours?

Don't know if this applies to your situation but hope it helps

It's publication #011217
Axle Pops or Creaks:
’00–02 S2000
On ’00–02 S2000s, if your customer complains of
hearing a single pop or creak from the rear of the
vehicle when changing direction from forward to
backward and vice versa, the problem may be
axle (driveshaft) movement in the rear hub. To
eliminate the noise, replace the spindle nut on the
affected axle. Apply grease to the surface of the
new spindle nut where it contacts the hub. Torque
the new nut to 298 N·m (220 lb-ft), and stake the
nut.
