clutch giving up the ghost?

Just switched to summer tires. TOYO Proxes T1-R 205/50R16. They grip. In fact they grip so well, it's the clutch that's not holding. The car has like 38K miles on it.

How expensive is it to replace the clutch (fingers crossed the flywheel is ok) and are there any upgrade options?

I went with this set up:
hardtopguy.com :: HTG PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS :: **SPECIAL** Complete clutch package S2000 2000-2006

As for the cost of install (and it's not an easy install), that depends on where you go.

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.

Hey AM, somehow I wasn't given the impression that you're a "launch" kind'a guy, n' 38 thou for a clutch on a hot-rod of any kind is respectable.
'You sure the demise of the clutch, while the Toyos might'a been the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, well, was it on it's way out anyway maybe?
N' I'd heard good things about the Hardtop Guy's clutch deal too, so I'm with Go on this one. It's where I'm plannin' on goin' when my turn comes up.
Be well.

You're actually right, I'm not the "launch kind of guy", I have my other car for that sort of thing. S2000 is for trackdays and just plain good old fun on the twisties. I've had this car for about 3K miles of those 38 and they were all done on slippy winter compound (plus there was snow and ice on the roads), so it may have been on it's way long before I noticed. Thanks, Go, I'll take a look at hardtopguy's clutch setup.

On a related note: is there a scanned S2000 repair manual hosted somewhere online? It'd help and save time with clutch replacement.

You can buy them in paper form or in disc form on eBay.

I've taken off the gearbox and yep, the clutch is gone. The actual disc was worn to 5mm thickness and the pressure plate and flywheel look worn, too.

I don't like the rattle lightened flywheels make at idle, so I'm gonna go with the stock unit and just resurface it to be smooth and even again.

Pressure plate is severely worn, but can be resurfaced as well and will last another OEM clutch disc no problem if I can stay away from the forced induction path long enough.

And here's my biggest problem, I can't take pressure plate off the gearbox. The fork is holding it securely and the ring seems to be tightened from the other side, so I can't reach it. I don't have the repair manual yet, so I don't know how to disassemble it without breaking anything. You guy's mind giving me a hint here?

Only gear box I've ever dealt with was a B&W 4-speed in a 1980 Corvette. The entire clutch assembly was on the motor side of things. The transmission input shaft slipped in through the clutch disk. Don't know what to say about your situation because it seems very different than I've seen before.

On the subject of weak clutches I got first-hand knowledge of that recently. I have a habit of running fast through 1 and 2, then going straight into 5 since I'm usually near the speed limit by the end of 2. One day I got a little split-minded and went into 5 but then floored it as if I had gone into 3. The engine does not bog down in revs, rather its powerful enough to slip the clutch a few seconds as the revs slowly come down to cruising revs...

My S is back on the road with a new clutch disc and resurfaced flywheel/pressure plate. It goes like it should, however due to rather signifficant wear on the flywheel and especially the pressure plate, I had to machine off in excess of 1mm to make them even and flat again. Anything above 0.5mm is basically not worth doing, because the new clutch disc will wear quicker. So I didn't really solve the problem, I just postphoned the solution. It seems I will need hardtopguy's kit after all and possibly quite soon (the current setup will last for 6-8 months tops).

How difficult is it to replace the clutch, and pressure plate? The clutch in my S2000 is slipping and it seems like a simple case of slipping, so would I need to replace the flywheel?
