oil problem?

Hello,

I am thinking of buying a used 2002 S2000. I have heard many of these s2000 burn oil and needs regular top up. Anyone have encountered this problem? Thanks

Gogo- welcome.

If the car was properly broken in there shouldn't be an oil prob. During the break in period you may encounter oil loss, but nothing excessive. Owners are encourgaed to monitor the oil level frequently, but then again that's just good advice for any new car.

I have an '05 and I haven't put a drop of oil in the last 6k miles since switching over to a synthetic.

My advice is to take it to a mechanic and have him check it out before you lay down your hard earned cash.

The Dude's on the money gogo. There's some talk occassionally about someone experiencin' oil loss, but if you read the posts on the site about that issue, you'll find that they're few n' far between.
When you consider that most of us are drawn to Stewie to wind it up tight n' put it through it's paces while it's hangin' onto the corners by it's fingernails, the fact that there aren't alodda posts citin' oil loss speaks volumes.
Sometimes you godda listen to the silence too.
Be well.

Agreed with the above, it depends on how the engine was broken in for the most part. I have had mine for over 5 years and have never had any oil burned off.

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.

I think break in technique is a big deal. This car is my first S2k. From years of V8s in cars and two-cycle engines in jet-skis etc..., I believe in the "hard break in", but, respected the information on these forums that these engines don't do so well if they spend a lot of time in VTEC during the break in period. So I every so gently and slowly (so as not to shock the drive train) floored it from 2-3k up to 5k rpm many many times in the first 10-150 miles (after fully warmed up of course). For example, on the way home from the dealership on the freeway. Result so far: zero oil burning at all with 10k+ miles on it. We'll see how it holds up over time, but I think its good to go.

However, if you have problems with a used car, consider the Krank Vents solution.
