I have an ap2, the v-tec just kicks in a little sooner than the ap1 and the ap2 has a little better ride, ( more refined than sports car ride ) which some like and some don't. You loose a little redline with the ap2 also so it's a trade off. You can get some of the ecu's reflashed for v-tec so that it kicks in sooner but remember everything a trade off.

The final decision lies in your droppin' your butt into the driver's seat of both for a real comparison.
If the price of one is that much greater than the other, go with what you can handle, 'cause, bottom line . . . with either one you won't be disappointed. I've got an AP2, but I know I'd still be wearin' that stupid grin if I had an AP1. 'Believe this falls under the headin' of a win/win situation. Be well. Java

I've been told that AP1's are a better handling car because the AP2's are made "softer". But that may be some people's opinion based on their experience which may or may not be professional experience. I have an AP1 with about 1000 track miles under my belt and I've ridden in AP2's on the track. I don't like the AP2 as a track car and will take my AP1 over an AP2 any day.

I read that the ap1 is better around a track if its a pro driver but the ap2 is easier to take around the track by the average joe. I dunno if its true just what I read.

Why would you have to pay more for a 2.2 vs. a 2.0? Is it because of the year of the car? If you are looking at specific cars, there are many more factors than just the extra 6 lbs. of torque you get and the 3 hp you lose with the 2.2. If you are talking about replacing an engine, that's a different question.

As for isu's suggestion that the AP2 is more driveable (hard) by the average Joe, I'd wholeheartedly agree. I'd spent time throwin' both aroun' before I made my decision n' opted for the AP2 because it's less demandin' as an everyday hard-driver. ('Sides, my buddy flat out told me that if I didn't go out n' get my own, my time in an open cockpit Honda had jus' come to an abrupt end)
As for the AP2 makin' any noticeable HP more than the AP1, well, like I said I ran 'em (on a couple of occasions back-to-back) n' if there's any HP difference, I didn't detect it. But more than someone's personal take on it, I'd go to the pros at the magazines who test these things on a regular basis n' are considerably more focused on exactly what to look for. The only gauge that I use is the ol' 'Nadometer n' it was registerin' pretty high on both the AP1 n' the AP2. I'd hafta say that the true difference lies in the way each of these models approach corners n' maintains attitude through 'em. The AP1 takes no prisoners. It ain't big on forgiveness. The AP2, while not very forgivin', is certainly more forgivin' than the AP1. It may take prisoners . . . but only to mess with 'em first. Be well. Java

I have an 01 AP-1 and an 05 AP-2, I can only offer what I have noticed. In my humble opinion the AP-1 is closer to a track car ... harder riding, quicker steering and far less forgiving of the "Average Joe's" driver input errors.
The 05 AP-2 will warn you a little sooner when you are on the verge of doing something stupid, it turns slightly slower, rides a little softer and is a little quieter. In short for a "spirited" run at the twisties I prefer the AP-1 but .... for a long drive with some twisties (Like a Wine Tour) I will take the AP-2. I enjoy them both equally! |
