Funny Noises

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and reasonably new to S2000 ownership. I have noticed a strange noise from the transmission of my 2000MY car and was wondering if anyone could offer some suggestions. When I move around in 1st or reverse, there is a strange rattle/clunk noise when I press the clutch pedal down to bring the car to a stop. It does seem to do it if I come to a stop from high speed going through the gears, only during "car park" type manouvering. Any suggestions? I'm thinking maybe clutch or clutch release mechanism but any advice would be much appriciated.
Thanks
Wes

I haven't heard of this one. Seems odd that it only happens in those two gears though. Let me forward this on and see if I can find some help out there.

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.

My guess would be the U joints (that's what we used to call them. Probably different name now). What you are feeling and hearing might be excessive play in the drive line with the slack being taken up when the direction changes.

From Xviper:

About this problem. I'm going to take at face value exactly what info is given since I don't have the luxury of asking questions.
I think the only reason he hears it in first and reverse is that the car is going slow enough in those gears to allow other noises (road noise, wind noise, etc) to subside. It may be very well it's doing it in all gears. He just can't hear it as well. When he pushes down on the clutch pedal, this is the only time that the release bearing (throw out bearing) is under strain. (When clutch is engaged, the TO bearing really doesn't do much. It's got quite a bit of free play before it actually needs to even touch anything under pressure.) He can test this be just sitting there idling in neutral and push down on the pedal as he would when he's about to move off in first or reverse. If there is no "rattling", then it's not likely the TO bearing.
It could also be related to the clutch disc spring retainers. These have been known to crack and get left just hanging. Any change in load or rotational speed can cause this retainer to make a noise. This one's a tough diagnosis without actually taking the tranny off. Here's what I'm talking about:

http://forums.s2kca.com/showthread.p...023#post269023

If not this, then he has to consider the tranny output shaft bearing. There have been reports of this part taking an early dump. Luckily, it can be replaced without taking the tranny out. He can check this out be going under the car and trying to "manhandle" the output shaft flange to see if there is excessive play.
Strangely, this bears a striking resemblance to a question that was asked on S2KCA last week. I wonder if it's the same guy. I gave a pretty detailed response there, too.
BTW, you can mention to that other guy .................... There is only one "U joint" on an S2000. It's on the steering column connection in the engine bay. The rest are more akin to CV joints and those are on the propshaft. The ones on the 1/2 shafts ARE CV joints.

Hi, thanks for the advice. Tried playing with the clutch and think it does sound like the bearings, which seen as I'd budgeted fro a new clutch isnt too much of a problem. However, a more worrying noise has now started. Every so often there is a distinct clunk/knock from the back end. Usually in 1st gear, and more often then not when pulling away from a junction. Worrying as the car is low mileage with full dealer history. Hope this car isnt going to get too expensive!
