Rough Shifting
I am one of those amateur drivers that went from an Integra to an S2000 AP2, and am having problems with the shifting.
What is the proper way of doing it? After the transmission warms up it gets better, but I still get some of the crunch from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. Double clutching does help, but I don't think that it's normal to have to double clutch every time to get smooth up shifting. What am I doing wrong? Some people say that it's normal, some people say that there is something wrong with the transmission, some people say there is something wrong with my driving. I have been driving stick shift cars all my life and have never had this problem before. The dealer is about to take my transmission apart, and I think that in the end, that will just bring more problems. |

It is common for the 1st-2nd shift to grind when the car is cold. I haven't heard of people experiencing the same problem with any other shifts.
I generally find shifting around 4000-4500 rpm is quite smooth. For the 1-2 shift in the mornings when the car is cold, I generally don't double clutch but simply shift gently and let the stick find its own way home. |

MattG,
I really appreciate your input. That's exactly what I experience with my car. I either have to shift gently or double clutch. I was just wondering about how normal this was. I have never experienced this with any other car. |

I guess S2000s can be quirky in certain ways. I love my car, and just want it to be right.

As I said in your thread on the other site: Try changing the tranny fluid first and see if that helps.

Thanks. The dealer after much consultation with Tech support decided to change the fluid to a different type. I guess higher viscosity. That made it better after the transmission warms up, but I still feel some of the crunch at times even with the hot transmission.
My concern is that the mechanics at the dealer are not really qualified to work on the car, although they assure me they are. They have done much simpler jobs than a transmission job, with less than desirable results. |

I have driven many stick cars over the years and the 2000 is the best shifting car I have ever driven. Pause for about 1/2 second between gears to let the synchromesh do its thing. If it's ok when warm then don't worry. Besides, if you grind them down they shift better

Jus' repeatin' what our beloved site gear-heads've been sayin' over n' over again ad nauseum: (which most always takes care'a any balkiness in the shiftin') fresh tranny fluid.
Be well. Java

The shift from first to second is rough until the engine warms up (at least 3 bars on the temp gauge). You might also change the transmission fluid to Redline MTF. I've found it to be the cure for most of the shift idiosyncrasies.

When its cold its best to baby it. My gears dont grind or anything as I shift slow and calmly while the car warms up. In the mornings she dont like to go into 6th until a few minuites of drive time. (About 4mins) But once she warms up the trany goes to silk.
I have only had the car about 3 weeks and I have driven close to 3000 miles. One other thing I started this thread yesterday with like no answers on launching if you could help thanks. http://s2000.com/forums/racing-discu...launching.html |
