Clunking sound going into 1st gear
My car's only about 3 weeks old.
I noticed that whenever I'm stopped and I put the car into first I hear a clunking sound from the transmission. I was wondering whether or not this was normal. And i made sure I had the clutch all the way down. It makes the sound as I put it into the gear, before i even begin to depress the clutch.

Hi K2,
not abnormal. I feel the same thing in mine all the time. It's just the geartrain hooking up. More a byproduct of having less car around you to insulate whats going on underneath you. Many things about real sports cars are more pronounced compared to your average fare. drive..... jagg |

I think it's normal; I have it too.
I have found that pulling the shifter firmly toward the driver's side against the stop/rail helps a bit - then again maybe it's just me and maybe it's just 'cause when I do that I go slower into 1st. But I think there may be something to it at least it my car. If I try just to go slow (w/o pulling to the side while moving the shifter forward), I still get a clunk, but if I pull a bit to the side while moving into gear, it usually doesn't. Others say, and this works for lots of different vehicles, move the shifter into some other gear, then go to 1st; that usually avoids the clunk. (On my truck, after I come to a full stop, I have to go move the shifter briefly into 5th before reverse otherwise I get a big clunk/crunch going into reverse!) (And you don't want to let out the clutch in that other gear - just move the shifter there are come out.)

I'd say if you're uncertain take it to the dealer and ask them to check it.
Usually they'll bend over backwords for a new customer.

Check one thing...be on a level surface without the brakes on and put it into 1st gear slowly. Does the car creep forward a few inches? If so, the clutch is not fully disengaging. I believe this is actually normal in this car because my car did it too. I just had the clutch replaced at 109k and it still does it.
