Question Check Fuel Cap

Does anyone know how long it takes for "Check Fuel Cap" warning message to be turned off by itself ? I have no idea why it came on in the first place because I always make sure that the gas cap is tighten to several clicks after refueling. It's been almost 3 days it came on.

The manual says it takes at least 3 days of driving under various conditions for the code to reset. Disconnecting the battery should also do it, but that may affect something else, not sure what.

This happens in my car all the time, even though I ALWAYS tighten my gas cap correctly. I have the factory cap, just too lazy to replace it yet and see if it fixes the problem yet. I will sometimes just disconnect my battery if I can't get to a code reader/clearer right away, but that usually causes my car to idle low/rough for about a 5 mins until the ECU figures itself out again. If your car does this, just sit and let it Idle. DO NOT rev it or drive it, just wait it out...

Disconnecting the battery will negate the radio and require a reset. Make sure you have the radio code first.

Odd, I have never had to reset my radio code... Wonder if that has to do with how long the battery is unhooked...

Did you unhook your battery, or have it done by a dealer? When I unhook them I put a charger on the cables first. My neighbors Accord battery went dead and she had to got to the dealer to reset the radio.

I always clicked the cap on my 03 three times as warned, but the first time the light came on I scooted into the dealer. They plugged it in and said, of course, it was the gas cap, then opened it up and showed me that it was barely on. I swore I always clicked it, but it was obviously way loose anyway. At that time they said it takes 6 cycles, and stressed that a cycle isn't just turning the engine on and off, but turning it on and running it a bit, then off for a bit - the little computer is pretty picky. Like you, it went off after a while.
I found that the clicks don't count - on that car, the cap was a little sticky so it started clicking right away while I spun it on. By pressing down firmly on it, it went right through that first click fest and really screwed on, then got into the "real" clicks that count. After that I never saw the light again.

That happened to me once. It took a couple of drives. I didn't keep track of how many days it took, but it did take about four trips around town.

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.

If you have a 2002 or 2003, you might have a faulty fuel filler tube. That's what I had. Even after multiple clicks after screwing it in, it appeared to loosen up by itself. There's a TSB on this and since it's an emission issue, the dealer will honor it if your car has less than 80,000 miles. They replaced my fuel filler tube and I didn't have problems with the light going on any more.

BTW: The light will go off after 3 complete cycles after the last occurrence. A cycle is a complete engine cool-down followed by a completely warm engine.
