I investigated carbon propeller shafts. The problem with our cars is that the propeller shaft is very short and the weight is mostly concentrated on the U joints at each end. So short of making them out of some exotic material which would be prohibitively expensive, the stock one is not too bad.

Carbon fiber drive shaft

I do know for a fact if you have the money you can drop the drive shaft weight by at least 2 pounds.
