Could be some play in the U-joints/CV-joints (whatever is back there). Get it up on a lift and it should be easy to spot.

Ya gotta read dis with your best Jersey accent (Joe Pesci style)………..

Knock in da trunk? Yea, dat happened ta me once. Turned out ta be a friggin tailight of all things.

Ya see, I wuz doin a friend a favor. Franky’s his name. Well his name is really Francis, but nobody but his mother calls him dat. Anyways, Franky calls me, Big Franky, not little Franky, dat little twerp, anyhow Big Franky calls me and sez he’s got a guy dat needs a vacation, so ta speak. He’s been lookin for em for days and needs my help. I sez sure. Big Franky is a good guy and he’s done a lot fer me and my brudder, so I figures I owe em. So he tells me where I might be able ta find da guy and I tells him I’d take care of it.

Dat night I takes da Riv to pick up Mikey, I’da taken da Caddy cause it’s gotta bigger trunk but da problem wit da title ain’t straightened out yet so I been leavin it in Carmen’s warehouse ‘til da guy shows ta fix the vin numbers. So anyways, I get Mikey, and me and him heads over ta where da guys supposta be. I figure it might take a while for da guy ta show so we stops at Palermo’s bakery ta pick up some cannoli. Now Mikey’s a big guy an he likes cannoli, so I gets a dozen, I figure 10 fer him and 2 fer me. Well, Anthony’s daughter LouAnn is workin at da bakery when we goes in. Anthony owns da joint and his daughter is real nice, I mean real nice, but I gotta show respect fer Anthony so I never tried nothin, ya know. But she gives me dem looks, ya know, and it drives me nutz. Anyhow, she trows in a couple extra and we get outta there before her brother comes up from da back. He’s a crazy dude and he don’t like guys messin wit Louann.

Anyways, we get in da Riv and head ta where da guys supposta be. Park across da street ta wait. I got da Riv’s windas tinted dark, but I gotta keep da windas down cuz Mikey had a little, shall we say "digestive disorder" and I wuz afraid we wuz gonna pass out or blow up, yea, blow up it wuz dat bad. I told em before ‘bout dem peppers but he don’t listen, dam guy, he don’t listen. But he’s a good guy ‘n me and his uncle go way back. Been buyin cars from him fer years and he always treated me right. Problem wit da Caddy wuz da first time I had any trouble. I call him, he sez he’d fix it, enda story.

So anyhow, there we wuz, eatin da cannoli and in 2 minutes da guy comes around da corner. Now I’m just havin my first cannoli, Mikey’s on his 4th, dat guy eats like a pig, yea he snorts ‘n everything, he eats like a pig I tell ya. Anyways, I drops da cannoli, grab da tire iron and heads across da street. Mikey stays back and opens da trunk. Now, I’m a little upset already cause of the lingerin fumes dat Mikey’s leavin in my Riv, plus da fact dat I didn’t get ta enjoy LouAnn’s cannoli, so when da guy makes a disrespectful remark ‘bout my mother, I whacks him once across da knees and once on da head.

Mikey picks da guy up and goes ta put him in da trunk and he don’t fit. I gotta few boxes of some merchandise in there and there’s no room fer da guy. Ok, no big deal, I tell em just fold em over and stuff em in like a suitcase, I figures da guy’s dead, he don’t care, right? So he gets em in there and but has ta sit on da trunk ta get it closed. I tell em ta be careful and don’t scratch da paint, it’s a classic Riv and I just got it outta da shop from that "incident" over by da landfill.

Ok, so anyways we got em in da trunk and we’re headed over da bridge to our certain pier dat we do business wit. A few miles down da road and alotta noise starts comin from da backa da car! So I pulls over ta see whats go’in on, pop da trunk and da guy trys ta jump out! Yea, da guy trys ta jump out! I figure he’s meetin wit St. Peter by now, but I guess he ain’t ready ta go, I guess. Anyhow, Mikey fixes da problem, gets him tucked in da trunk again and we take him to da pier.

So now we’re on our way back ta see Franky and I hears dis knockin comin from da backa da car. We get ta Franky’s place and I open da trunk ta see what da noise is. Can’t find nuttin, I looks all over and I can’t find nuttin. Anyways, we give Franky da good news dat his aquaintence is on vacation and we get outta there.

Fer da next week or so, when I’m drivin down da road, I’m hearin dis knockin noise, sometimes it’s there ‘n sometimes it ain’t, but it won’t stop. I looks around a couple a times but can’t find nuttin, so I takes da car to da shop. It’s da same shop dat fixed da car after the landfill incident. They do good work there. Armand’s da guy’s name, him and his cousin have da place, been there forever.

So anyhow, Armand comes out, opens da trunk, sees dat a tail light socket was knocked loose and bangin on da inside of da trunk, plugs it back in and da noise is gone, dats it, it’s gone. Easy as dat. I figure it musta got knocked loose when we wuz givin dat guy a ride out ta da pier, maybe.

Now I’m not sayin dat da problem wit your little sports car is da same thing, but ya might just have somethin knocked loose. If ya can’t find it, I’ll give ya Armand’s numba. He’s right down Rt 22 a ways in north Jersey. He’s a good guy and tell em I sent ya. Dat may not be your problem, but it might be. I’m just sayin’.

Knock, knock.
Who's there?

Anyway, is it a "knock, knock, knock..." or is it just one "click" when you take off?

I have an 08 and I get the same thing. It sounds like something in the rolling in the trunk? It only happens on take off and not all the time?

Maybe its the exhaust shifting on its mounts and touching the car body ?

What is the problem if it's a single knock? The noise I'm experiencing is a single knock on take off or when in reverse. I can stop, shift into reverse and when I start moving the car, it would make this noise. I can also move the car in reverse, stop, shift into 1st and when I start moving, the car will again make this noise. There are times when I cannot make the noise, usually when the motion is slower.

I read about the hub nut service notice from Honda for 00-02 yrs but wanted to hear what others think. There is nothing loose in my empty trunk and glove compartment and I've checked under the rear of the car and everything looks good. This noise aside, the car drives normally.

To check the CV joints Block the front wheels on a flat surface. Jack up one rear wheel and with the hand brake off, softly rock it back and forth while observing the CV joint at the diff and near the wheel. Do you see movement? You can check all 4 CV joints from this position. And you can also see if the motion is inside the diff. To check the propeller shaft CV joints it easier to do on a lift but you can raise both rear wheels with the parking brake on and try to turn the prop shaft while observing the CV joints.

On mine I had 85000 miles and the LSD was gone as where all the CV joints. I replaced both drive shafts, the prop shaft and the LSD.

if u only hear it going from Reverse to Fwd, and Fwd 2 reverse it is the joints on the drive shaft. they are worn out and the knock sound that you are getting is the joint hitting the coupling in the direction, and u wont hear it again when until u change directions and it moves 2 the other side of the worn joint.
hopefully that made sense i'm not 2 good at explaining things.

Good story, waitin for Java's reply. Check your jack and what not. You need to explain what kind of noise it is, and try and pinpoint where exactly the noise is coming from.

Thanks for your reply. This makes the most sense to me. It explains everything: noise only when changing directions and no noise when moving very slowly.I did intend to check on my drive shaft but did not have the time yet. I will make sure I check it out tomorrow.
