Loads of opinions on this topic if you use the search. And you will probably find around a 50-50 split in those opinions. Mostly everyone will be in favor of the one they drive.

So the real answer is the one that you like best or best fits your driving style. Have fun deciding. It's a good dilemma to be in.

Lets just put it this way, the one you choose is the one that's better.

F20C FTW..

But that isn't what I drive... LOL j\k

I have an AP1 and love it. The one you get is the one you will love and speak highly of the next time a newb asks that same question.

If you like a high reving motor go F20 (9000 rpm vs 8000 rpm). They also stay in vtec better because of gearing and rpm set-up. They are also known to consume more oil since they have extra oil squirter's on the side of the blocks since they red line higher than the AP2. Not a bad thing but something to know.

If you want a little more torque go F22 (+6 or 7, not much to notice).

This is the least to worry about. You also need to look at suspension changes and cockpit changes. That may end up being more important to you than you think. You can search for the changes between the years since it is much more than the motor..

Hope that helps.

Not cooler, it just takes the extra ones to keep it as cool as an AP2. Remember it takes more oil to lub and cool at 9000 rpm than @ 8000 rpm.

I went with the AP1 03. 00-02 had the plastic rear window. The 03 model is when they first used the glass rear window and it was the last year for the 2.0 motor. They are right they make the same hp but the AP1 revs higher to the 9000rpm. In 04 they switched to AP2 with the 2.2 motor and dropped the rev on it. In my opinion the 03 is the sweet spot for the car. I am not sure about this but you can always swap the ECU or flash it to run to the 9000 but i dont know how safe that is because it is a different motor not designed to go to 9000rpm. The AP2 trim is much nicer in my opinion though. You really cant go wrong with either one. We have regular meets down here in Charlotte NC and the AP1 motors seem to perform a little better than the AP2 and pull on them a little more. Maybe its the driver though who knows. Also alot of the guys runnin AP2 that have had previous AP1 wish they had the 9000 rev. So id go AP1 but to each his own. good luck and I hope you like what you end up with

Incorrect. They used the glass back window starting in 2002.

John (S2kx2) has one of each and prefers the handling of the AP1 for aggressive driving, but prefers the AP2 for cruising and comfort. Nuf said in my book...

I've owned both and agree with John.

IMO, the differences in the motor aren't that huge. You can definitely feel the extra torque of the AP2, but it's nothing to write home about.

The real difference is suspension. The AP2 sacrifices a little performance for comfort. It's not much, but it IS a sacrifice. I definitely miss the AP1 about 10% of the time I'm driving. But for the 90% of the time I'm commuting, I like the AP2. It's just a bit more comfortable.

Bottom line... you can't go wrong with either. They're both a blast to drive. Both will out-handle nearly everything else out on the road. If you're looking to the S as a daily driver, I'd suggest the AP2. For a weekend toy... AP1 hands down.

Allow me to clear that up for you. Starting in 2006, they re-scaled the horsepower rate chart making 240bhp become 237bhp although the horsepower remain unchanged.

The next newbie starting up this topic, AP1 vs AP2, is going to get ignored! This topic has been discussed enough in the past!

The OP doesn't even bother to check back and post responses. He just wants to bring up some arguments.

So who's arguing? Granted, the OP could have checked old threads. But you could have just pointed out that there have been past threads... no reason to throw him under the bus (especially not on everyone else's behalf).

If you've had enough, fine. I'm sure your not the only one. Just ignore it then. Let everyone else decide if they want to talk about the S on an S forum.

More or less. They just changed the crank ratings to 237 because Japan's conversion from kw to hp changed.

Here are some ratings:

AP1:

240 bhp (179 kW/243 PS) @ 8300 rpm (US) c/r 11.0:1
237 bhp (177 kW/240 PS) @ 8300 rpm (EU) c/r 11.0:1
247 bhp (184 kW/250 PS) @ 8600 rpm (JP) c/r 11.7:1

AP2:

237 bhp (177 kW/240 PS) @ 7800 rpm (US) c/r 11.1:1
237 bhp (177 kW/240 PS) @ 7800 rpm (EU) c/r 11.1:1
239 bhp (178 kW/242 PS) @ 7800 rpm (JP) c/r 11.7:1

Spoon has the same motor but @ 12.1

Dude, itsn't obvious to you that the OP knows about F20C and F22C? If he didn't then he wouldn't know what they're called.

No, it isn't obvious to me. Why would the ability to name an engine make it obvious that someone is an expert? I know Ford produced a 351 Cleveland and a 351 Windsor. But I don't have experience with either and therefore couldn't tell you which, if either, is better.

You're reaching, dude.

So do you know which is better, F20C or F22C? LOL. The cycle continues...
