Oil gauge may be off...

Hello

I just recently hit 3700 miles on my 08 s2000 and my oil gauge now reads 20%. I have been told I should change it when it gets to 10% which should be around 6000 but I may hit the 10% mark very soon. Is this odd? When exactly should I change my first oil? I know this question has been asked many times but I have never received a straight answer. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Ray

IMO the first oil change should come under 3k that's the serious break in period. I would have changed it about 2000 mile then 3k after that. I have an AP1 and no gauge and to be truthful I don't trust the gauges. So, I'd change my oil ASAP if i was u

If the color of the oil is dark enough, change it. I change the oil when it turns dark. Usually around 3,000 miles, but with synthetic you're good until 5,000 miles doesn't matter the color.

I did my first change around 4000 or 4500 miles. Got tired of looking at the oil minder damn thing. Just do it. No car has ever suffered from changing the oil. Incidentally, I went against the general consensus and used full synthetic. The car doesn't really use a drop of oil. It DID early on but stopped by about 2000 miles or so.
That's a straight answer. Do it.
BTW. The ecu decides when to change the oil based on rpm's and such. Not by miles. Or so I'm told.

The oil life monitor is not based on miles. It's based on engine operating conditions and accumulated engine revolutions. So if you spend a lot of time in lower gears, you won't get as many miles out of the oil as driving in 6th gear on the highway. It's in your manual.

You are fine, the first oil change should not be within 4,000 miles. Change it when your car gets to 10%.
