There's a few differences:

1) The exhaust will stink
2) You will be polluting the air
3) Any performance gain is psychological
4) Your car will not pass a smog test
5) It's illegal

I gotta disagree with dj on this one.
1. Stinking is all in the eyes of the beholder I personally like the smell I also like the smell of burning rubber.
2. If youre worried about polluting the air by doing that I honestly dont know what to tell you maybe you shouldnt have purchased a s2000 in the first place, a prius would be better for you.
3. While the gains are very minimal they are there its been dyno proven.
5. Is incorrect depending on the state youre in. Most states will only check the obd 2 and a car with no cat but a cel fix will pass.
5. It is illegal I guess thats all I agree with.

It's really only worth it if your turboed. I gained 22whp with a test pipe. On a n/a car it's not really worth it. To really get a benefit from a test pipe you should invest in a full exhaust too.

Sorry nfr, I didn't mean to come across like a butthead.

I don't know of any reasons why it's a good thing to remove a converter these days. Long ago, they were restrictive, but technology changed and they're not like that anymore. For 2 years I've been looking for dyno sheets to prove there is something to gain. Haven't found them yet. If anybody's got them, post them.

I'm an old phart and I remember what it was like before pollution controls were put on cars. It wasn't pleasant. You could see and taste the crap in the air. But I bitched like everybody else when catalytic converters, low compression and air pumps came along back in the 70's and knocked the crap out of the horsepower.

But things got better over the years and now most of us realize it was the right thing to do. We now have much cleaner air and because of technology changes, the horsepower is back up. Converters are now non-restrictive and as of '06, the S2000 doesn't even have an air pump. Works pretty good.

test pipes are an easy and cheap fix to eliminate drone with most aftermarket exhausts...

I'm starting to think I could have saved the 80 dollars for my test pipe.

I dyno'd 2 more whp over without it. That was in a different year, different climate, different spark plugs, and different dyno. Not enough to say it helped or was worth it.
